An Open Letter To My Fellow Moc's

Some inspiring words for my fellow students to take with them this fall break

To be completely honest with you, I had no idea what to write about this week. That is the complete truth. Total and unequivocal writer's block had taken hold of me. Normally what I try to do when authoring my passages for Odyssey, I take an event of significance that happened to me or in the news and expand upon it. Author something interesting and witty from said significant event. That left me without a topic to write about – because nothing happened. At least not to me.

Carrying on, you might be wondering by what I said “…because nothing happened. At least not to me.” Let me explain. I was slightly, rather poorly, referencing to that, at least for the college students at Florida Southern, there is an event that is going to collectively impact us all: fall break! That means for a lot of students here, everyone is going home for much-needed R & R. Catch up on lost sleep that they did not receive during midterms week because of class, work, and other time commitments. The struggle bus affected a plethora of moccasins this week and so far this semester. Including me.

But this piece is not to recap the experiences, some of them good and others bad, that occurred this week. What this piece is meant to do is something much more personal. It’s not necessarily an easy task because this task comes from the heart. I would like to personally and honestly wish all of my fellow "moc"’s a safe and exhilarating fall break. Let me be the first to say that you all deserve the time off.

To continue, this past half semester has been a hectic one. We had fall recruitment for both fraternities and sororities on campus; we had several home sporting events – which affected our school pride to varying degrees; we had a few political figures (Donald Trump and Tim Kaine) grace us with their presence, igniting ideological tensions between ourselves and our friends; all in addition to other hair pulling events such as relationships, exams, and club meetings, that have taken up our time. It is going to be nice to get away for a while – not really because I am staying here all week. It will be fun though.

But, in closing, to my friends and classmates who won’t be joining me this week, I just want to let you know that I will certainly miss your collective warming spirits on campus this upcoming week. I will miss seeing the radiant smiles and vibrant energy that you bring to this campus. I will miss the in depth conversations – kind of weird coming from an introvert – that we have. I will miss going out to events such as Tune In and the PLE Lecture Series with you all. Just in short, just like this article which could have been written better, I will miss you all. But hope you all have a fantastic time off this upcoming week. I cannot wait to hear the exciting stories that I am going to hear when you get back – maybe I can write about it.
