If you've ever read my author bio, which I strongly recommend you do, you'll know that I am a pretty big Harry Potter fan. On top of being highly entertaining, I feel like it's actually really relatable to life in the real world, or it is if you don't like to relate to the real world. I am definitely guilty of that.
In the Harry Potter fandom the two most derided houses are Hufflepuff and Slytherin. Hufflepuff for being pushovers or weak and Slytherins for being evil. So I think it should come as no surprise that some of the strongest friendships are between Slytherins and Hufflepuffs. I know that's certainly the case in my life. I am the Slytherin, and my roommate/bestie is a Hufflepuff. This is my letter to her.
My Hufflepuff,
There are a lot of things I want to thank you for.
First, I would like to thank you for always believing in me. If I'm being honest it's probably one of my favorite things about you. Outwardly I am a very confident person, but on the inside you know I have a lot of self-doubt. Whether it's a new project of a hard test, you are always there to cheer me on. It's one of the greatest feelings in the world to have someone believe in you, even when you don't believe in yourself. Thank you.
Second, thank you for always taking care of everyone. From the birthday presents, to the baking, and everything in between you are definitely the mom of the friend group. You are always thinking of others, and that is very helpful for me. Like many Slytherins I can sometimes get caught up in my own world. Your selfless attitude is contagious and I think it makes me a better person. Thank you.
Third, thank you for seeing the good in every situation. This has been especially helpful over the past few weeks. Personally, I am very prone to pessimism and cynicism, but if that bothers you it never shows. It's been great to have someone who can constantly remind me to look on the bright side. You remind me that every person and every situation has a silver lining if you only look hard enough. Thank you.
Finally to my favorite Hufflepuff, my partner in crime and forever carpool karaoke partner, thank you for always being you. You are one of the best friends I have ever had, even though we are very different people. Thank you for not letting the world change you, and make you as bitter as I am. You have made some pretty tough times bearable, and some pretty great times even better.
Thank you.
