Dear 14-year-old self,
Right now it feels like life could not get any more complicated. But let me tell you, it can, and it will.
Do not waste time obsessing about everything you wish you had. Do not waste time worrying about what all the high school kids think of you because guess what? It does not matter what they think; they are still trying to figure out who they are themselves.
Enjoy being a kid. Yes, you ARE still a kid. You’re not anywhere near being an adult. And that’s okay because being an adult is not as fun as you think it is.
Stop worrying about what you look like all the time. Wear whatever you want, and take off your makeup. You may not realize it, but you’re trying to grow up too fast. There is no rush. Adulthood will find you.
Enjoy the present, really live in it. The future will come.
Your first heartbreak will be excruciating, but time will heal it. When it feels as though your heart could not hurt anymore, know that it can. But realize that the pain will make you stronger.
Hold onto the people in your life who are always there for you. Do not waste time worrying about the ones who walk away; it’s not worth it.
Be strong and stand up for yourself because people will try to walk all over you.
Be confident in yourself because you actually have a lot figured out, more than you realize.
You’re not going to have all the answers even when you’re older, and that’s okay because most people don’t. There is beauty in the unknown.
Do not overwork. You’ll have the rest of your life to work.
Do not let others tell you who you can love. Even though you’re only 14, you do know what love is to some degree, but realize that you’ll learn a lot more about it later.
People will say hurtful things that will get you down, but do not get stuck in it, pick yourself up and realize that there will always be people like that in the world. It’s not your fault.
Find the time to do what you love everyday because that’s what will give you energy.
Say what you’re thinking, sometimes others need to hear it.
Do not waste time with the boys who say they just “aren’t sure about you,” or the ones who change their mind everyday. You deserve better, and you’re worth it. And no, not all guys are like that. You will find someone someday who knows exactly what he wants and isn’t afraid to fight for it.
If you knew all of these things then, life would have definitely been easier and less painful. But these are the things that make up who we are when we are older. These things make us stronger.
