An Open Letter to Milo Yiannopolous From A WVU Student
Tyler Channell

Dear Milo Yiannopolous,

I want you to know that I was there last night, held back by a friend. I was called names by your supporters. I was pointed at by older women and men. I feared for my safety at an event that you spoke at, all because of who you are and what your represent.

I want you to know that Daniel Brewster, the person you called a "fat faggot" is a friend of mine. He is so much more than the negative words you identify him with. He is a professor, an advocate, a mentor and most of all a human being.

Your views do not represent the Republican party, but rather a group of bigoted people who hate themselves so much that they have dedicated their lives to making those who fight the good fight the antagonist.

Do you think that calling someone a "fat faggot" just because they don't agree with you justifies that kind of the language? Do you think that this is an effective way to reach an audience to promote your views? You do not only give yourself an awful name but the Republican party as well. It is people like you that make people like me fearful for the future.

I do not stand for hate. I do not stand for you calling a fellow member of the LGBTQ+ community something so hateful. I will not stand to let it happen during my time here and it will not happen for others' time here either.

I did not call you names. I did not say harsh things. I was called a "Nazi sympathizer" by extreme leftists because I did not tell you to "go fuck yourself" or tell you that you're a "piece of shit". Although I agree, I will not stoop to your level of hatred. I will only use my words for good, and you will not receive the worst side of me by any means.

I will fight for goodness. I will not let people like you deflate the fire that burns inside of me every day. I will not let my Latinx friends, my LGBTQ+ friends, my POC friends or anyone else be bullied by you.

I encourage everyone to use their Twitter to tweet "#BecauseofBrewster", "#ONEWVU" and "#ForGood" in support Daniel Brewster.

Do not say hateful things about Republicans because this is NOT what their party stands for. Do not even berate Milo; for we are better than nasty words. We are far more intelligent, far stronger and far better than to stoop to the level of someone who hates themselves so much that they find the need to peg their insecurities on others.

I am positive that WVU can champion this hate with goodness. In light of this event, I know that we are united more than ever. We are one, and we will not allow one man divide an entire community.

Friendship. It's defined as the state of being attached to another person by feelings of affection or personal regard, but what really is friendship? Is it that occasional hallway talk with that one person who always manages to cheer you up? Is it that relationship you have with someone where they can be gone for a long period of time, but when they come back, it's like they never left? Is it spending every waking hour with someone, and knowing every detail about their life? Is it the relationship that's filled with fighting, but filled with even more resolution? I've learned that it's all of these things, and every friendship is different. It's a beautifully dysfunctional mess that should always be cherished and never be taken for granted.

I've known you your entire life. More than likely I held you in the first three days of it and at least one of us cried. Cousins are truly one of the best things in the world and while sometimes I complain about how many people crowd Grandma's living room on Christmas Eve, I wouldn't trade you all anything.

You are my best friends, the only people who can understand what it's like on Thanksgiving, and you are the spunkiest people I have ever met. But you as so so young, most of you are just now starting your adventures in the public education system. I mean, I'm so very young too. I'm not married, I don't have children, heck, I just started my adult life, but I do want to give you what little advice I have. My dears, these are the things I want you to know.
