An Open Letter To Myself

Be yourself, for there is no one better.

An Open Letter To Myself
Ali McGary

I have been waiting so long to put my thoughts into words. I have been contemplating when the right moment would be. But I don't think there really is ever going to be a "right moment". It's hard to find the right words, sometimes there just isn't anything to say. Sometimes it's hard to put into words all the tears and laughter. The moments of feeling that course through my veins. If only I could copy and paste my tears, then maybe everyone else would understand.

Dear self,

It's okay to feel sad. It's okay to feel frustration. It's okay to feel broken. It's okay to feel lonely. It's okay to feel lost. It's okay to feel tired. It's okay to feel happiness. It's okay to feel laughter. It's okay to feel wanted. It's okay to feel joy. It is okay just to feel. Your feelings are validated, whatever they may be. They mean something. There is a stigma about always being happy. I say you shouldn't always be happy. You need to experience your lowest point in order to discover your highest.

You are so much more than you think. Stop treating yourself as less. Open your eyes to your beauty and grace. There is always a light in the darkest of places. If you can't find the light, create it. Be the light. Time heals. Give yourself that time. Take time to work and improve yourself. Recognize your flaws and embrace them. Nobody is perfect and no one will ever be perfect.

Always, always strive to be the best version of yourself. Never stop giving back. Never stop feeling. Never stop loving yourself. Do what makes you happy instead of letting others dictate your happiness.

Listen to your own advice and practice what you preach. Don't be a hypocrite. Laugh more and worry less.

Stop putting the weight of the world on your shoulders. You are only one person. Realize the bigger picture.

You are special. You are enough. You kind-hearted. You are laughter. You are the sunshine on a rainy day. You are brilliant. You deserve the world.

This place that you're in, the limbo that you feel will pass. Everything will be okay. Everything happens for a reason. The obstacles you have faced and will face make you a stronger person. "I hope and pray you never fail to remember how great it feels just to feel" John O'Callaghan.

Love,

You

To those who celebrate, you just spent an entire day cooking an elaborate meal with all of your favorite foods. You probably ate your body weight in pumpkin pie and mashed potatoes. What happens now? 18 Things I Want To Do Now That I'm 18

I'm technically an adult, so I'm legally required to live a little, right?

For the entirety of my high school career, I was always seen as the goody-two-shoes. I never got in trouble with a teacher, I kept stellar grades, and when I wasn't doing extracurricular activities, I was at home studying. Even when I did go out, it was usually with a bunch of fellow band geeks. The night would end before 11:00 PM and the only controversial activity would be a fight based on who unfairly won a round of Apples-to-Apples when someone else clearly had a better card (I promise I'm not still holding a grudge).

Now that I'm officially an adult, I want to pursue some new things. I want to experience life in a way that I never allowed myself to do prior to entering college. These are the years that I'm supposed to embark on a journey of self-discovery, so what better way to do that than to create a bucket list?

I've been super busy lately with school work, studying, etc. Besides the fact that I do nothing but AP chemistry and AP economics, I constantly think of stupid questions that are almost impossible to answer. So, maybe you could answer them for me, and if not then we can both wonder what the answers to these 15 questions could be.
