Make new friends, but keep the old?

"Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver and the other's gold." This phrase is very true to me. I have cherished everyone who is in my life and even those who have simply passed through it. I believe everyone has made some sort of impact on me; teaching me a lesson, leaving a scar, or sewed up a wound. You are all important to me. I am thankful for the memories that we have shared or the ones we are still making. I'll never forget the positive ways you've affected me, the favors you've done for me, and the numerous lessons you all have taught me. As cliched as it is, you all have shaped into the person I am today. The faces I meet and the things I experience are going to continue molding me. My one goal is to affect, impact, and influence those and the world around me like you all have.

I know I drone on and on about how thankful I am, but I do feel truly blessed to be where I'm at, to have met who I have met, and to have experienced everything that I've gone through, good and bad. Life is full of obstacles; these trials and tribulations are placed before us to shape and mold us. These obstacles can be people or there will be people alongside you helping you get over them. We are constantly interacting, talking, meeting new faces and new personalities. You all have opened my mind, led me to more experiences and opportunities, and showed me ugliness, beauty, compassion, selflessness, and so much more. The list goes on and on.

You have all chose to stay in my life or not. We have all experienced different situations and scenarios. I don't want anyone to feel guilty for choosing to stay or not; we all have our reasons. I just want to express how thankful I am for all of you. You all have impacted me so much, in so many ways. Without you, I'd be lost; I wouldn't even know who I am. You have allowed me to broaden my horizons and inspired me to achieve more. I have always aimed to make people proud, even if they aren't around to notice or care. I am truly thankful for you all. Your words and actions, positive and negative, have inspired me and pushed me forward. Without that motivation and momentum, I'd truly be lost. I have taken the time to reflect on everyone around me and the situations I've faced. It's hard not to be thankful when something good can come out of any situation.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
