An Open Letter To Everyone Who Doesn't Like Christmas

It's okay to not have yourself a merry little Christmas.

An Open Letter To Everyone Who Doesn't Like Christmas

Dear "Scrooge,"

No, I'm kidding. At a different time, I would have probably called you that if you hated the holiday season. I'm sure I probably did call someone that a time or two. But my point of view has changed now... now I understand why so many people may not love the holidays.

I wanted to tell you that whatever it is that made you hate the holidays is completely understandable. You are allowed to dread putting up your Christmas tree, you are allowed to not have the most decorated house on the block, you are even allowed to detest the holidays season altogether. For some reason, we, as human beings- but also Americans- think that everyone has to think that November through January is the "most wonderful time of the year". If you're one of those people who hates the holidays, I'm here to tell you I understand.

I used to jump on people who said they dreaded Christmas. "What? You don't like Christmas?! Who are you even?". But now I don't do that anymore... now I get it. This year a lot of things have changed with me, and I've found myself dreading the holidays. I've found myself not at all looking forward to putting up the tree and decorating, wearing Santa hats, helping put up stockings, even presents don't sound that intriguing to me this year.

I wanted to write this letter to tell you that it's okay that you don't love the holidays like society says you should. To tell you that I understand, for the first time in my life, that the holidays can actually be a hard time- not a cheerful one. I understand now that there are many reasons you may not have the holiday spirit everyone talks about.

And most of all, I wanted to say that I am sorry. I'm sorry for whatever it is that made you dread Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, and all the times in between. I'm sorry if you have no family to spend it them with, if you have no money for presents, if you or a loved one has become ill during this time, if some event in your life has scarred this time of the year for you. I am so sorry for whatever tragic event has caused you to hate this time of the year.

Whatever brings you down around the holiday season, I hope you don't let it consume you. I hope you remember that it only lasts somewhere around forty days, and after that, we all go back to our lives until the next holiday season. Most of all, I hope you remind yourself that it is one-hundred percent okay to not be a holiday person. If you don't want to put up your tree this year, don't. You don't have to go with the status quo like the love of Christmas and the spread of holiday cheer.

So, with that, I hope you make the most of this holiday season, as will I.

Sincerely,

Not Thrilled About Christmas Either

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
