An Open Letter To College Students Who Don't Know What They Want To Do

Dear Each And Every College Student,

As I'm sitting here writing this article, I currently have over 10 different tabs open. Although Facebook is always sitting there, it's usually overflowing with webpages for different graduate schools, career paths, jobs, etc. I've felt as if half of my college career has consisted of researching exactly what I want to do after the short four years of college conclude. Through the countless hours of research and asking for advice, I've realized something very important: No one knows exactly what they want to do!

To make you all feel better, I have changed my major approximately four times. From psychology to education, to business, to communications and film studies. I've been incredibly indecisive about what I want to do. Make sure that when you are in college, you are taking a diverse course load. I wouldn't know that I didn't like my previous majors, had I not taken all of the classes that I did. The easiest way to dictate the types of things you like or dislike, is by taking classes that are different from each other. I know that next semester my courses range from music classes to a religion course, to a psychology in the law course. It doesn't get more diverse than that!

Another thing that's always been in my head is that I need a career that makes tons of money. Although money is always good, that should not be the most important part of your career decision. Don't sit through classes that you despise just because you want to make a lot of money. It's not worth your time. You are going to make money no matter what, wouldn't you rather be happy?

Lastly, before you can have an idea of what you want to do, make sure you know yourself. It's so important to become familiar with who you are as a person before you can know what you want in life. It's never a good idea to have your career path chosen for you. Who cares if both of your siblings are getting their PhDs, that doesn't mean that you have to become a doctor too! If you want to be an actor, be an actor. If you want to be a professional pencil sharpener, you go sharpen those pencils!

The point is, it's OK that you don't know exactly what you want to do. I'm going to be entering my senior year, I'm still indecisive about the types of careers I'm interested in. Although stressful now, I know everything will work out. It's the same for all of you. Try new things, find yourself, and you will land that job of your dreams someday!

Sincerely,

The guy who changed his major four times

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
