Dear Class of 2017 College Student,

It may seem like just yesterday that you started your freshman year of college, or it may seem like eternities ago. You may feel ready and excited to move onto the next phase of your life, or you might not have a clue what in the world you are meant to do. No matter what you’re feeling, your undergraduate years are slowly coming to an end. For the first time in your short life, you are going out into the real world with endless possibilities laid out in front of you. The Class of 2017 is made up of people from different backgrounds, hometowns, or majors who are being released into the real world together.

During your last semester, take some time to reflect back on your college years. It may not seem like it at a glance, but you have grown and learned so much over the past three and a half years. You have become a stronger global citizen, with fresh ideas and perspectives. You are becoming an expert in your field, ready to serve the community in which you choose to live. You have learned more about yourself-- your morals, your values, and your passions.

Although the last semester of your undergraduate career is sure to be a stressful one, don’t forget to sit back and enjoy the ride sometimes. Join a club that you’ve always wanted to but never made time for. Go out with friends and be crazy. Make mistakes and make memories. Skip class and go on a weekend getaway. You can’t just opt out of your career without consequences, so take full advantage while you still can!

Just as importantly, remember that you are about to be part of the next group of young adults released into the world and that you are part of the next group to hold government positions, teach kids, care for the sick, and so much more. You are part of the next batch of college students fresh out of university who can make a difference. Therefore, take some time also to think about the mark you want to leave in the professional world, and in your new community wherever that may be. Think about what you will do with the experiences you gained during four years of undergraduate school to make the world a better place.

No matter how you are feeling going into this final semester, know that you are exactly where you need to be. You’ve made it this far because you love what you are preparing to do in school and you are capable of doing it. You’ve made it this far because you made new friends and shared countless memories with them. College may be slowly coming to an end, but the possibilities for your future are only just beginning. Plan ahead for the next step, and enjoy the present moment.

With love,

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
