An Open Letter To The Best Friend I Made In College

You never know when you'll find your other half.

An Open Letter To The Best Friend I Made In College

All throughout my life, I have had countless best friends who I swore I could never live without. A lot of friends come and go, and I don’t always know when or where I will meet them or lose them. The dictionary definition of a friend is “a person who has a strong liking for and trust in another person.” The definition of a best friend is “a person’s closest friend.” Well, my definition for a best friend is “someone who puts up with all of my shit and vice versa.” So, here is an open letter to my first (and truest) college best friend.

I never could have guessed that we would become best friends. When we first met during freshman orientation, I just assumed that we would spend four years together and never talk to each other again. Little did I know, I would be crashing in your dorm room at four o’clock in the morning contemplating life decisions about college, my love(less) life, and all the other different things freshmen deal with.

We would say hey to each other when we would pass each other on campus, and we did not think twice about it. We would text each other about our assignments from the ridiculous general studies requirements. We would grab lunch together here and there, but we did not truly hang out on a social level. I never planned on us becoming what we have become.

Now look where we are. We're always hanging out in your dorm, going to parties every weekend, going on random two o’clock in the morning drives, jamming to our stupid playlist consisting of the songs we hate and the songs we love, going through the drive-thru and ordering obnoxious amounts of food, even though we totally end up overeating.

You have made my freshman college experience one of the most unique experiences I have yet to have. I honestly cannot wait to spend my life with you, enjoying all the crazy memories we'll make before and after we graduate. I cannot wait to go through Greek life together and experience everything that we possibly can together. I know that we are going to make new friends, and I know that we are going to be so busy later on in our college careers, but there will always be a special place for you in my heart as long as I breathe, and I hope you feel the same. Of course you feel the same; you are the yin to my yang, the tuxedo to my bow-tie, and the best to my friend.

I hope that you shoot for the stars and achieve your dreams because you truly deserve it.

Signed truly,

(Who the hell am I kidding?)

Love your crazy *ss best friend.

So, always cherish every moment with every person you chose to share a big part of your life with because it truly is an experience worth experiencing.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
