An Open Letter to Brock Turner

You deserve to hear this.

An Open Letter to Brock Turner

Hello Brock,

You have no idea who I am, but I have heard plenty about you. Social media has plastered your face all over letting the world know of what you did to that poor woman. Countless people have expressed their hate for you, while on the flip side others have stuck up for you including your father who brushed the entire situation off as "20 minutes of pleasure." Other survivors of sexual assault are enraged and hurt as they see the repeated trend of no justice for them. You only had to sit in jail for three months instead of the six you were originally sentenced to and I join the voices of the angry because you deserve to rot away forever thinking about the damage you have done.

I don't know whether or not you will care about this statistic, but according to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, over 90% of all campus sexual assault cases are not reported. You want to know why this probably is? This is probably because monsters like you get away with little to no punishment at all. The way the victims of sexual assault are treated is just another way of showing them that they do not matter. Rape culture in today's day and age is centered around making up excuses for the perpetrators instead of holding them accountable for their actions. The National Sexual Violence Resource Center also reports that rape is the most under-reported crime 63% of sexual assaults not being reported to the police. I wonder how you feel about the fact that you were caught in the act of committing the assault and still you get to move on with your life.

Sure you have to register on the sex offender list, but that will not be enough, you will walk around with a target on your back, but still walking free in the world, getting to experience life that you do not deserve. The only sliver of light that I can pull out of the entire situation is that California lawmakers have written up a new bill to add mandatory prison time to certain sexual assault cases. It's already passed through unanimously so in no time you will have a law that was inspired by your case. So congrats, you went from an All-American swimmer to all-around rapist.

Let me just repeat that for everyone who is brushing what you did off and standing up for you: She was an unconscious woman who did not ask for sex. That is called rape. R-A-P-E. So Brock I hope you don't enjoy your freedom, I hope you can barely sleep and are haunted for the rest of your life with the actions you committed.

Sincerely,

Another Person Who Hates You

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.

10 Things Only Equestrians Understand

Yes, it IS a sport. Yes, I fall all the time. No, I do not ride in jeans with a cowgirl hat on.

Growing up I have always wanted to own a horse. My grandparents own a well known equestrian facility in Georgia, so I have been riding since I was born. A bond between a person and their horse is a bond so strong that it cannot be broken. Everywhere I went I wanted to be around horses, even forcing my family to go on trail rides during vacations. Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember has taught me great responsibility, as well as 14 things that all equestrians can relate to.

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.
