Dear Fellow College Kids,

Fall is in the air. To a grown up, and young children, that means pumpkin spice, hot chocolate and piles of leaves to jump into. To college kids that means midterms and hours upon hours of homework. In other words, back to school has really began.

In times like this where one could easily spend a whole Saturday in bed doing homework and crying, it's important to remember that you shouldn't. Go for a walk, go get coffee, hell, go to the grocery store, but for God's sake, don't spend all day in bed.

While you should be doing your homework and trying you best in school, my RD recently shared a post that said that most college students get homesick around this time, and they're not wrong.

Fall is when the holidays are approaching, it's when you go to the pumpkin patch with your mom and dad, and spend hours yelling at the TV with your family when the Huskers are losing (or winning, since we've totally be crushing it lately... GBR). Colleges stop planning back to school things, and people start leaving for the weekends. It can get lonely and overwhelming really fast.

Good news, though, there is something that helps. Take time for yourself and treat yo' self. Whether it's being homesick or being drowned in homework, make a date with your significant other, take a day off of work, go get your hair cut, go spend $5 on a pumpkin spice mochfrappicinowhatever. Call your mom, FaceTime your dog, buy a candy bar, pet a dog, play with a baby, watch a movie. Go enjoy being young and the freedom that comes with it. So much pressure is put on us to get good grades, have a god job, eat and look like those fitness Instagram people (sidenote: do you think they're bred in labs? Because my butt doesn't look that good and I do squats sometimes).

My point here is that midterms are over. Grades are posted, but they're not final. The holidays are coming, and while you're not at home to participate in old traditions, make some new ones. Drink a beverage that's so sweet and has so much sugar you need to go to the dentist immediately. Eat food that's good for the soul. Turn your phone on silent and just watch the stars with some friends. The world won't stop spinning if you take an hour or two to act your age.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
