Are you okay?
This is what I want to ask you each time you open your mouth to say something unkind.
Who hurt you? Who made you think it was okay to talk to someone that way?
In my experience, it is never okay to speak to someone in such a way that could cause them to be mentally wounded. It is never okay to mock them and accuse them of things that just aren't true. It is never okay.
I have had my moments of customers yelling at me and accusing me of things that I've never done and it hurts. I know it does. Getting called a "f--king idiot" doesn't just roll off of your shoulders. Getting yelled at because you're just doing your job, doesn't just bounce off. There is very little truth to these things when people say them, but they still hurt.
Do you understand that we are people too?
Do you understand that you wouldn't like it if someone walked up to you and started calling you names and cursing at you and putting you down?
Do you understand that unkind words never do any good?
Do you understand how fragile the human soul is?
Do you understand that we need to treasure it?
Do you understand that we are all special and should all be treated kindly?
No one likes getting called names or accused of things.
No one likes a bully.
You can disagree with someone kindly, it is possible.
You do not need to be rude.
You do not need to blame others for how you're feeling.
You can work through this trial in your life.
You can make it work.
When you were berating that employee who was just doing his job, did you ever think that maybe making friends is difficult for him and that when you stated, "you probably don't have any friends do you?" he may have gone home and cried and thought about how worthless he must be because of what you said?
Have you ever thought about how your words can do so much harm to another? Like when you accused a girl who was simply trying to help you through the line at the movie theatre of purposely making the process difficult?
Have you ever thought about how much hate and ridicule the people working in customer service positions go through? Have you ever thought about how they might be at the last straw and you may have just broken the camel's back?
What you say affects people directly--whether you think it will or won't. Be careful in what you say and do because you never know what others are going through. Be kind. The world and your friendly neighborhood customer service workers will thank you for it.
When you walk up to someone working in customer service, be kind to them. Understand that they may have had only rude customers come before you. And if you encounter someone being rude to an employee--no matter where they are or who they work for--step in. The employee will thank you so much for acknowledging that what they went through was definitely not okay.
Show kindness to everyone everyday.
If you do this, I promise you will be happier and feel like you are making a difference in the world.
