An Open Letter From Senior Me To Freshman Me

Dear Freshman Me,

I know you're scared. College is an intimidating place. You've been dreaming about this moment for years now, the moment where you would be able to get away from these people you've been stuck with for more than a decade. But, four years later, you're about to be able to stretch your wings again.

I've experienced a lot over the past four years. It's been such an emotional roller coaster. Sometimes, I didn't know if I'd be able to pick myself back up. I'm almost there though, even though a lot of times through my college career I thought I wouldn't even make it this far.

I'm almost done with my college career, so I thought that I'd to give you a couple of pointers to make sure that your four years are the best of your life.

1. Talk to everyone.

Freshmen year is the year that everyone is the friendliest. Everyone is just as terrified as you are of college. The best thing that you can do is band together with the people around you. Isolating yourself will only hurt you in the long run. The people that you make friends with during freshmen year may turn out to be your friends all through college.

2. Give all the clubs that you're interested in a chance.

College is filled with many different opportunities. One of the ways to experience as much as possible is to get involved. Explore all the clubs that you can and feel them out so you can meet some lovely people, and explore your interests. That's one of the best ways you can enjoy college.

3. Relationships aren't that important.

There are a lot of hot guys in college. I see them every day. But don't get too stressed out about finding the right one. I don't care how many movies you've watched, Stomp the Yard or House Party, but sometimes those relationships just don't come to fruition. I know this is going to sound repetitive, but school really is so much more important. The boys will always be there. Trust me.

4. Take school seriously.

High school doesn't prepare you for college, so it may seem like a lot at first. Don't give up. Don't let the 300 plus student lecture halls deter you from paying attention. You may not be taking as far of a dive into your major as you would like, so you may not be connecting with your schoolwork as much as you'd like to. But try, please try your hardest. Your future grades will thank you in the long run if you start your college career on a high note.

5. Believe in yourself.

College is hard. There's no way around it. Getting through it takes time, patience, and so much effort, it can be hard to muster it up sometimes. Future you believes in you more than you'll ever know. But I want you to believe in yourself as well. Confidence is half the battle.

You will be amazing, love. You may not feel like you're ready for college, but college isn't ready for you.

Best,

Senior Me

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
