An Open Letter from a Coffee Addict

To the people who love mornings,

As we go about our lives, life presents us with several small joys that are often under-appreciated. For example, there's the sunshine, fresh blankets from the dryer, and adorable puppy videos on social media. All of these small things bring endless amounts of joy for most people. For me, a small joy is a cup of joe.

Coming from a night owl, nothing makes me get out of bed more than a cup of coffee. After working early mornings almost every day this summer, my body has adapted to a morning coffee buzz to kick my brain into gears for the day. Immediately following waking up, I look forward to drinking coffee. Without coffee in my morning routine, I feel incomplete. It's almost like I need coffee in order to feel functional and alive. It's actually quite hilarious because my coworkers/family/friends know the difference between me when I've had my coffee, and me when I haven't had my coffee.

My go-to coffee is a large caramel iced coffee from Dunkin' Donuts. As I travel on my daily commute to work, there's a Dunkin' Donuts on the way (Let's just say that this is a blessing for my well-being at my workplace, but it's a curse for my bank account). I go through the drive-thru of Dunkin' Donuts, and my mouth waters as I think about gulps of a smooth, creamy, delicious iced beverage. It's almost like iced coffee has the ability to turn me into the happiest person alive after consuming it.

Being a coffee addict comes with many pros. According to what I've read on a few news websites recently, people who drink coffee are more likely to have a longer life. If that's not the best benefit coffee has, then I don't know what it is. Additionally, coffee consists of an extremely rich source of fiber. You can ask any coffee drinker about this. If you haven't used the bathroom at least two or three times since consuming your daily intake, then did you really drink coffee?

Although there are many pros to being addicted to coffee, it comes with a few cons. If you're running late for work or class, and you can't squeeze enough time to make your morning coffee, you will begin your day with a pounding headache. When you arrive at work with your head pounding, you don't feel awake and alert, causing grouchiness and extreme irritability towards just about everyone. Here's an accurate depiction of me without coffee:

Then, there are the days where you have too much coffee, and you look like this for three hours:

I don't think I can name anything better than a fresh cup of coffee on a Sunday morning. When I wake up, I smell the brisk aroma of a brewed dark roast. As I walk downstairs, my father greets me with "I made you coffee," and let's just say that my happiness automatically increases drastically. I get the biggest mug I can find, add vanilla caramel creamer, and plop down on the couch with my precious cup of happiness.

I never really wanted to be addicted to coffee, but college happened, and here I am. It's kind of disgusting to think about how much coffee I consume when I'm at school, but it definitely helps me survive. It doesn't help that my friends are equally as addicted to coffee as I am. On the daily, I receive a text, "Do you want Dunkin'?" and they usually already know my answer.

Being a coffee addict is a bittersweet experience. You can enjoy coffee in just about any size and form. Coffee addicts can drink coffee hot, iced, or frozen and still enjoy the caffeine intake. Also, you're guaranteed to receive presents relating to coffee, such as humorous mugs, cute tumblers, and various different flavored grounds and syrups.

As a full-blown coffee addict, if there was one lesson to teach the non-coffee addicts, don't attempt to interact with a coffee addict until they've had their morning intake of joe.

Thanks a latte,

Your coffee addict

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
