An Odyssey-Induced Interview
retroleds.com

This week for The Odyssey, all of the content creators in the Shippensburg, PA community were asked to answer a few questions about themselves. So, being the dutiful content creator that I am, I answered them! (What can I say? The Dude abides.) Now read on if you dare to know a little bit more about your favorite Italian/Beatles-loving Odyssey writer! Some answers may surprise you, but I hope you enjoy!

How would your best friends describe you?

I was told this year that I have a certain "charming awkwardness," which I guess is a good thing? I can definitely see where they were coming from. I make lots of jokes, nerdy film references, and occasionally slip into a British accent (which doesn't make sense, because I am not, in fact, British). But I have also been told that I am a good listener and was given the nickname "sunshine" by one of my best friends in college. (I guess that's a good thing too?)

Tell me 10 things I would see when I walk into your room?

1. My bed-always made and always adorned with stuffed animals, it's great.

2. A fan- not particularly exciting, but completely necessary because I would most likely melt into a puddle at night without it.

3. A "Madeline" mural- my dad and godfather painted it for me when I was only three years old. Even after living in the same house for 14 plus years and repainting my room, I could never get rid of it. I love my personal piece of artwork too much.

4. My bookshelf- stuffed with books and trinkets that I've gathered throughout my life.

5. My snow globe collection- I love having a little memory from each city I've visited. (Oddly enough I don't have one from Philadelphia despite living right outside the city my entire life. Go figure.)

6. Stuffed animals- more specifically; a stuffed seal named Icy, a large blue dog named Garrus, a frog named Bono, a lifelike fox named Ash, a knitted Sherlock Holmes, a little Halloween ghoul named Treats, Woodstock from "Peanuts", and a plushie of Pope Francis. (I have no shame.)

7. My desk- a bit crowded at the moment, but it's got a blue sparkly lava lamp!

8. "Gullible on the ceiling"- you read that right, when I was in eighth grade, I took a black crayola marker and wrote the word "gullible" on my ceiling. I am a comedian.

9. My side table drawer- home to my hat collection and where my Hello Kitty teacup alarm clock rests. (I promise that I am actually a responsible adult.)

10. A photo album- containing all of my old Yu-Gi-Oh cards. (Really, I swear I am an adult.)

What are three random facts to know about you?

1. I was born on Oct. 5 on my parents' fifth wedding anniversary.

2. I have a Tibetan Spaniel named Garfunkle. He is under the impression that he is a human and uses me as his personal pillow.

3. I am slowly but surely teaching myself how to play ukulele and guitar. My ever-loving and patient boyfriend helps me with the guitar as best he can, but it's hard because my hands are smaller than those of most toddlers.

What teacher or professor most impacted your life and why?

You mean I have to pick just one? (Ugh, fine.) Actually, I can't choose just one. I have to give it up to my high school Spanish teachers; Sra. Ahl and Sra. Celebre. They knew I wanted to pursue my Spanish education in college and believed in me even when "el subjuntivo" proved to be a major challenge. It is because of the both of them that I had such a successful first year of college-level Spanish classes.

Why did you choose to create content with Odyssey?

One of my closest friends, Casey, recruited me over a Twitter conversation! I have always enjoyed writing, and Odyssey seemed like the perfect platform to get my voice heard and a reason to write every week.

What motivates you to continue creating content for Odyssey?

The prospect of getting paid $20 if my article gets the most shares. Just kidding. I actually never realized how much I had to say until I sat down to write my first article. After that, ideas for articles just started flowing and I'm really excited about a few upcoming articles, so stay tuned!

What are you majoring in and why did you choose that field?

I am majoring in Spanish (with a minor in Professional Writing). I've always had an affinity for the Spanish language ever since my preschool teacher began instructing us on how to say the names of colors and animals in Spanish, to my starring role as "Mama Oso" in my second grade class' production of, "Ricitos de Oro y los Tres Osos" ("Goldilocks and the Three Bears"), to reading the creepy novelette Aura during my senior year of high school, I love Spanish.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Hopefully happy, hopefully healthy, hopefully on an adventure.

Who’s your personal hero? Why?

Again, I have to choose just one? This is an entire article on its own, but for now I'll name my mom, my dad, Eleanor Roosevelt, and The Dude from "The Big Lebowski." (I like to have a wide variety of role models.)

What animal best represents you and why?

I'm inclined to say a chameleon, because they change colors based on their mood. I completely wear my heart on my sleeve, so it's not hard to guess how I'm feeling at any given moment (whether that's intentional on my part or not). They also catch flies with their tongue which is a skill that I someday hope to possess.

If you could live through any historical event when/ what would it be and why?

My last article was all about why I love The Beatles. And since only Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr remain today, I would've absolutely loved to have been there for the Abbey Road album cover photo shoot.

Is your childhood dream job the same as your current dream job? Explain.

I used to think that I wanted to be a nurse like my grandmother and two of my aunts. Unfortunately, an aversion to the exposed human body and slight hypochondria soon revealed that nursing would be a terrible field for me to go into. Now, I dream of helping others communicate across cultures. Whether that's in fashion, social work, or education I've not quite decided. Check back in with me in three years- I'll give you a more detailed answer then.

how to adult
Twitter

It is the time of our lives that we are beginning to enter the adult world and most of us, if not all of us, have no idea what we are doing. It's like starting a video game, but skipping the tutorial. We're all just running around aimlessly hoping we accidentally do something right that moves us along the right path. Now that graduation has just happened, or is right around the corner for some of us, it's time to start thinking about how we are going to take care of ourselves once we are on our own.

College involves a whirlwind of emotions, whether it’s from the stress of an assignment (or twenty), or from fighting with your roommate. It can be overwhelming at times and it’s important to take a step a back and calmly think things over. Maybe gain some perspective. The following aren’t foolproof tips and may not apply to you, but I was able to find success with them (hope you do too!)

However, we all know that the holidays have overall changed a little from what they used to be.
