The End Of An Era

My odyssey with the Odyssey has come to an end.

The word “odyssey” has a lot of different meanings. It’s an epic poem written by Homer. It’s a journey. It’s a car. It’s also an online literary magazine I’ve loved writing for over the last two years. But all journeys must come to an end, and mine is no exception. This is my last week as a student at La Roche College, and this will be my last article for the Odyssey.

I’ve loved writing my whole life. I constantly scribbled down short stories as a kid, I wrote for my high school and college newspapers, I blog, I write poetry, and I wrote for the Odyssey. Being a part of the Odyssey has given me a voice that I wouldn’t have had otherwise. It’s given me the opportunity to express my thoughts on controversial issues—an opportunity I wouldn’t have had writing for a college newspaper. It’s given me a place to share my poetry. It’s given me a chance to get published in a real magazine even before graduating from college. It’s given me the chance to connect with people who love writing just as much as I do.

It’s very bittersweet. Writing for the Odyssey has been one of the best parts of my college career. Knowing that this article is the last one I’ll ever write for the Odyssey makes a lump form in my throat. On the other hand, I’ve learned a lot from it. I’ve learned that writing is what I want to do for the rest of my life. I’ve learned how important it is to communicate with your team and stick to deadlines. I’ve learned that it’s okay to write about controversial issues as long as you do it in a respectful and educated way.

I don’t know what the future holds. But the Odyssey has reminded me why I love writing. So, to all my fellow Odyssey writers out there, I just want to say thank you for giving me this opportunity. It’s been an amazing journey.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
