An empath walks into a bar (and subsequently has a freakout, because like... too many people, ugh.)
No, this isn't the beginning of some corny joke you've heard a thousand times. It's an introduction to the story of my life, and bar can be interchanged with literally any other word.
According to Dr. Judith Orloff "Empaths are highly sensitive, finely tuned instruments when it comes to emotions. They feel everything, sometimes to an extreme, and are less apt to intellectualize feelings. Intuition is the filter through which they experience the world. "
*freeze frame* Yep, that's me, and you're probably wondering how I got here.
Jittery, nervous, and anxious about absolutely nothing in the middle of a crowded room?
Filled with indescribable bursts of panic while out shopping and completely confused as to why that's happening?
( Disclaimer: Yes, I have been diagnosed with depression and anxiety. Yes, I have both aspects of my life well under control. Yes, this is a totally different feeling than regular anxiety.)
Naturally, we all have the ability to be an empath. Unfortunately, due to societal conditioning many people tend to repress their feelings, and in certain cases turn to addictive behaviors because the feelings are wildly intense, often, and inescapable.
Being sensitive to the world is no easy feat, especially when it seems like there are negativity and hatred everywhere you turn.
But your soft and gentle nature is also strong and brave in the face of adversity. Trust me.
There are no guidebooks to being sensitive and empathetic, but a solid grounding and meditative practice can work wonders.
Also, these handy tests here.
And this little "guide" which I previously said does not exist, but there are no rules. Whatever feels right for you is best!
All in all, enjoy and relish in the beautiful gifts you have been given, especially those to see the world through compassionate and loving eyes. Empathy is the key to a society functioning out of love!
