Summer is basically here, and soon, the hype of being back home will go away. Don't let the boredom hit you hard, and don't use the 'what can I do in my small town' excuse.
I know firsthand that Arkansas isn't the most fun state, but there is a ton of things to do here. You'll need gas money, maybe food money, and at least one friend.
If it gets too hot outside, you all should hit up the best water parks of my childhood. Hot Springs and Little Rock are the most well-known cities in Arkansas, and though they may not be known for this, they should be. Hot Springs has Magic Springs and Crystal Falls while Little Rock is home to Wild River Country. They both have the best lazy pools in the land. Just a tip, Wild River Country is closer and cheaper, but it doesn't come with a theme park. Magic Springs has live concerts, which will feature big names like Hunter Hayes and a really good theme park. If you go to Magic Springs now, the early season general admission tickets are only $15.
If you're brave enough, hit up Little Rock, but I repeat: don't go alone. Go tour the Clinton Presidential Library, go take pictures in front of the Capitol, or if you're feeling childish, go visit the Discover Museum. The Little Rock isn't too shabby, and if you're feeling all educated, go visit the historical Central High School. I've been to downtown Little Rock once and I wish I could go every day, so if you're feeling touristy, go down there and visit the River Market.
Hot Springs has the best spas, and you could even go dig for diamonds. If you're into the supernatural, then there are various haunted hotels, plantations, and houses in Arkansas to go and see. If you're feeling granola, go hike a mountain, or go to Petit Jean State Park.
If you're in south Arkansas, go fishing, but never miss out on some great movies. Go float the Buffalo, and if all else, go downtown in any unfamiliar town and I promise there will be good food and decent shopping.
I understand that you can't stay in Arkansas all the summer, so just a reminder that Beyoncé, Drake, Rihanna, and Justin Bieber will be in Tennessee and Texas. If you have some extra money go to the Verizon Center, Riverfest, The Hangout Fest, or even Lollapalooza in Chicago.
Don't let your summer go to waste. You only live once, so get off the couch, take off work, and go explore. If all this fails, at least take online classes.
