An American's View Of The Election

We are all Americans.

If you're anything like me, this election was not what you were expecting. Having to choose between a woman who is being investigated by the FBI and a media tycoon who objectifies and assaults women was not the choice I wanted to be faced with. As a fist-time voter, I was not thrilled with the options. But I had hoped that whatever our country decided, we would work with it and would work on making America stronger together again (see what I did there?).

I cannot believe how wrong I was.

This was the first time I have been truly ashamed of my generation. Following the announcement of the president-elect, the American flag was burned, protests filled the streets, and a cry of "not my president" was heard around the globe. I could not believe what America had become.

It's amazing how intolerant the tolerant can become, isn't it? People turned against one another for the same reason that so many have struggled to come together. President Obama and Secretary Clinton, among others including Bernie Sanders, have shown their support and their willingness to work with President-Elect Trump in order to better the nation. I wish I could say the same for our country. And our citizens. Because sometimes there are more important things in life that happen that make people snap awake. Things that matter more than male birth control.

He is not the best. He is certainly not the person I would have selected to represent America ideally. But this is our country, and he will be our president. People need to realize that "me" is not the most important thing in the world, and you might not get everything you want. This nation is throwing a temper tantrum because for the first time, this instantaneous, spoiled generation has been disappointed. We have grown up in a world where everyone is entitled, and everyone deserves things for being what and who they are. When things don't go our way, let's burn things and cry and scream. NO. We are better than this.Yet Trump will be our president, and we are not giving him anything for what he is. How does burning our nation's flag that people have DIED for make anything better? Think about that. How many of you have such a passion for something that you would die for it? Imagine someone taking that and burning it. Because that's what happened. Every person who burned or took part in burning the American flag is part of America. People seem to forget that. We can work together and work for the same cause. As President Obama stated, we are all on the same team. We need to fight for the future, together.

Trump will not move backward. He will move forward, with our help. He needs the support and respect that we as citizens need to give him in order to succeed. We are all Americans, and when things get harder, we cannot simply march in the streets and chant "not my president," because he is.

He deserves a chance. Let's buckle down and keep the flag up. We are, at the end of the day, all Americans. Remember what brought us together as a nation after the 9/11 attacks, the shootings at Sandy Hook and Orlando, Ferguson and many other events that reminded us what it meant to be American. Let's ask what we can do for our country, and fight for America.

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

As this semester wraps up, students can’t help but be stressed about finals. After all, our GPAs depends on these grades! What student isn’t worrying about their finals right now? It’s “goodbye social life, hello library” time from now until the end of finals week.

1. Finals are weeks away, I’m sure I’ll be ready for them when they come.
