My sororities parent's weekend was last weekend, so my mom came down for the weekend to visit. Since there is absolutely nothing to do but eat in Blacksburg, Va, we decided to go see a movie.
Let me preface by saying, I love Amy Schumer. She is everything I aspire to be. She is funny, corky, and always true to herself. Her movies are some of my all-time favorites. When I saw her new movie "I Feel Pretty" was playing, I had to go see it.
My review? I loved it. The movie depicted the struggle of an average girl and her lack of self-confidence. I not only thought the movie was relatable but inspirational. Amy Schumer plays Renee Bennett, who bumps her head and believes she is beautiful. Although no one else sees an appearance change, Renee starts to live her life fearlessly! The results, she falls in love, lands the job of her dreams, makes new friends, and begins to live her life outside her original comfort zone. While she does lose parts of herself along the way, she centers herself when she realizes that her physical appearance never changed, rather the change was in the way she believed herself to be.
I was surprised to find out critics did not agree. The movie got a low 34% on Rotton Tomatoes, a popular site ranking movies. To my surprise, a common argument to the movie was that Amy Schumer was not heavy enough to play the role of Renee. But, this is where I think critics are all wrong. What made "I Feel Pretty" so relatable is that Amy Schumer is average!!!
You do not have to be overweight to be severely impacted by self-confidence. The movie was meant to connect with women who have absolutely no reason to believe they cannot succeed. The purpose is to inspire every women to live their life as if they looked like the "ideal women."
Renee got everything she wanted without any part of her appearance changing. Confidence is the key to success. Women should feel empowered by "I Feel Pretty" because it shows that everyone is insecure.
Even the most beautiful characters feel insecurities.
So, no critics, Amy Schumer was not to thin for this character. If you believe this, you are part of the problem. You are only legitimizing lack of self confidence when women do not meet particular "standards."
Self confidence is an everyone problem. Go see this movie. It is worth your time.
"I Feel Pretty" reminds viewers that confidence can take you places in life. Live everyday as if you were the person you most wanted to be. In the end, you might just relaize how great it is to be YOU.
