Our God is a God of abundant giving. Ask and receive, right? Of course, we have all seen that there is more to that: prayer, devotion, and timing.
I have heard the story of Peter walking on water countless times in countless ways. You think of every difficult thing you go through in life and the lesson is, keep your eyes on Jesus and do not doubt his ways.
We have learned throughout our lives that if we keep our minds set on God we will not sink. We see that Peter walked on water during a storm and doubting Him made him struggle to keep his balance. I want to touch on this story one more time because I so often forget the power my God holds.
First, in the story of Peter walking on water, it hits me that Peter asked for Jesus to call Him to the water. So many times we use this story for situations we have no control over, but in this instance, Peter asked God to do something beyond his human ability.
Next, Peter doubted that he could do it himself. How relatable is that? We ask God for things beyond our power, yet we question if WE can do it. Peter asked God to provide a miracle, and then fell short when he realized that the miracle was being done through his human flesh.
How many times do we ask God to work His will in our lives and then become scared when we do not feel we can complete His plan? That logic is completely flawed from the inside out. We serve a God with no limitations, and we somehow believe that we are the limitation.
God did not ask Peter why he doubted himself, he asked why he doubted HIM. Our relationship with God is built on this foundation that we do nothing and God does everything, yet we somehow feel we must earn His grace and mercy. We ask God to fulfill His plan for our lives, but we doubt if we can make it happen ourselves.
Just like Peter, I think a reevaluation needs to happen. God is the one in control and He alone holds the power. God alone is to receive glory for the works completed through me. Stepping back is the only thing needed of me, because God is going to take complete charge and He does not need my help.
Keeping our eyes on Jesus, yes, that is exactly what Peter should have done. What Peter should have also realized is that he never had the ability to walk on water in the first place. God decided to show His power through him, and that had nothing to do with Peter’s abilities.
Don’t doubt the power of the creator of the universe because you feel inadequate, believe in His works because He is more than enough to do a miracle through you.
