“Adichie is a word-by-word virtuoso with a sure grasp of social conundrums in Nigeria, East Coast America, and England; an omnivorous eye for resonant detail; a gift for authentic characters; pyrotechnic wit; and deep humanitarianism. AMERICANAH is a courageous, world-class novel about independence, integrity, community, and love—and what it takes to become a ‘full human being.’”—BOOKLIST
About the book:
"Ifemelu and Obinze are young and in love when they depart military-ruled Nigeria for the West. Beautiful, self-assured Ifemelu heads for America, where despite her academic success, she is forced to grapple with what it means to be black for the first time. Quiet, thoughtful Obinze had hoped to join her, but with post-9/11 America closed to him, he instead plunges into a dangerous, undocumented life in London. Fifteen years later, they reunite in a newly democratic Nigeria, and reignite their passion — for each other and for their homeland."

Americanah is one of those books that is not easily put down. From the moment I picked up the book, I was immediately drawn in. Adichie's writing is easily understood, but poetic and powerful. She creates imagery that allows the reader to fully delve into the scene she is depicting as if they were a part of the story with the characters.
In this beautifully written book, Adichie pushes boundaries and has inspired readers to think differently about race in America. She opens the minds of readers to understand what immigrants, even in modern times, are forced to deal with because they wanted to make a better life for themselves.
Both of the main characters are fiercely themselves; the readers will find themselves wanting to be best friends with the characters and help them out in times of need. This story will have you laughing and crying while feeling like you learned something important- something you'll want to share with others.
**I highly recommend this book as it inspires conversations about subjects that need to be discussed. However, this book contains strong language and sexual elements, so I am not recommending it for young readers.**
“Masterful. . . . An expansive, epic love story. . . . Pulls no punches with regard to race, class and the high-risk, heart-tearing struggle for belonging in a fractured world.” —O, The Oprah Magazine
