Everyone loves American University Athletics and everyone loves dogs! If American University varsity sports teams were dogs, which would they be? Find out below. . .
Wrestling
Bull dogs. Tough on the outside but kind and sensitive on the inside. The wrestling team is a bunch of sweethearts off the mat. Their post-practice tired looks, bumps and bruises make them the perfect match for a bull dog.
Men’s Soccer
Collies. Much like this breed of dog, the men’s soccer team is very well groomed. . . just look at their hair! Collies are a herding dog which bring people together as they are exceptionally stranger friendly. These men represent all that it means to be a collie as they too are natural born leaders and the life of the party.
Women’s Soccer
Golden Retrievers. Go take a look at the women’s soccer roster and you’ll notice that many of them have luscious blonde locks that can rivals those of Rapunzel herself. Like these dogs, these women have a lot of physical strength and a teamwork mentality, I mean AirBud did.
Men’s Track/Cross Country
Chihuahuas. Comical, entertaining, and overflowing with energy these eccentric dogs perfectly describe the men’s track team. They are always causing a scene, making a joke and having a laugh. No amount of running can take the energy and charisma out of these guys just like nothing can calm a chihuahua down.
Women’s Track/Cross Country
Whippets. Way too excited about everything, a little mischievous, and a friend to all, this group of women are always on the move. Naturally, their fast, lean physiques and super energetic personalities make them the team equivalent of the whippet.
Men’s Basketball
St. Bernards. True gentle giants, the men’s basketball team has a very powerful presence when they walk into a room (most-likely because they’re so tall). The basketball team, like St. Bernards, are very gentle and kind, but can be aggressive when provoked, like in a game.
Women’s Basketball
Huskies. Hard working, lovely and protective of their own, much like huskies the women’s basketball team is a powerhouse group of women who are very focused on their team goals. They work very well as a unit and tend to have great success, just like husky dog sledding teams.
Field Hockey
Dachshunds. The swishy brown ponytails of the field hockey players resemble those of the happy Dachshund. If that isn’t enough, these ladies are the first ones in the locker room in the morning as they march out to practice at 7am and they're all definitely morning people, just like a cheerfully yappy Dachshund. Their optimism and positive attitudes, even at the crack of dawn, and chatty, chipper qualities make them the perfect match for this breed.
Lacrosse
Beagles. When a beagle is in the room you’re going to know it. The lacrosse team is a cool, confident, low-maintenance group of women who get along well with others. Their strong, lead by example mentality and serious demeanor make them great competitors and great companions.
Volleyball
Pitbulls. Arguably one of the most BA dog breeds of all time, the pitbull is tougher than nails when it needs to be but also sweet and gentle. The volleyball team is a unit of ruthless competitors on the court, but catch them after a game and you’ll see that they’re some of the nicest girls on campus.
Men’s Swimming and Diving
Dalmatians. A slightly scatterbrained, but incredibly intelligent, loyal breed, the men’s swimming and diving team is perfectly summed up by this dog. They love to be surrounded by people and are incredibly active. I mean hello, they swim hundreds of laps for fun… ew. These easy going dogs sum up the swimmers’ work hard play hard mentality.
Women’s Swimming and Diving
Puli. With their insatiable curiosity, natural athleticism and “take no sass” way of doing things, the women’s swimming and diving team are just like the Puli. If their determination and physical strength isn’t enough to convince you of their similarities with the Puli then their wet, yet beachy, post practice locks will do the trick.
