As a lover of music, any new album that comes out is instantly downloaded on my Spotify, and played until I discover if I like it or not. Khalid’s new album, “America Teen” definitely made it on my favorites list. From the techno 80’s sound to the smooth drops of Khalid’s voice this album is probably one of my favorites.
The songs on this album are perfect “teen” songs. He shows how universal the ages he is referring to the teens by using words like “us” and “we”. Some of the songs like “Coaster” and “Angels” can be compared to pop ballads like Sam Smith. Whereas, the more upbeat songs like “Another Sad Love Song” or “American Teen” have a more synthetic beat and catchy chorus to attract attention. The one thing I love most about Khalid is he sings not for power or how many high notes he can hit, his voice is like velvet, just floating through the notes. His voice is calming and relaxing.
His songs definitely adhere to the younger adult generation. With “Location” he refers to modern day things like “dropping a location” or when he uses the word “subtweets” in one of his lyrics. Obviously the older generation would not be too familiar with these phrases. His songs are also very common with the idea of “young love”. He constantly uses love and relationships in his lyrics and the downfall of them. This targets the broken-hearted young adults. I also noticed that his songs constantly compare modern love to technology. For example: “Location” and “Saved” he emphasizes the love being transported through a telephone.
This album definitely brings out emotions and memories for me. These songs make me nostalgic. I look back at all the memories I made and the stupid things I have done. I think this album is a perfect balance between upbeat catchy songs and soulful ballads. Everyone should take some time out of their day, whether they are sitting around studying or at the gym, to check out his new album.
