Fall has arrived and that means one thing, well besides the over obsession with making all things smell and taste like pumpkin and the dreading of UGG boots season-- American Horror Story has returned,
and this time around we're checking into the Hotel Cortez.
The Hotel isn't exactly known for its hospitality or complimentary breakfast, but it does come with interesting characters including vampires, a demon, a cross-dresser, a serial killer, a few ghosts, and one seemingly ordinary desk clerk. However, this season is a bit different from the previous, as we see some new faces while saying goodbye to some that we have cherished in the past. Season five introduces the one, the only Lady Gaga to the cast, who gives audiences around the country quite the show with her tantalizing portrayal of the Countess, a sexy vampire queen whose motive isn't exactly clear and whose past is just as hazy.
So far in the season we have also been introduced to the Addiction Demon who sports a metal screw-like dildo and tortures those who come to the hotel seeking drugs. This demonic individual is accompanied by Sally, a ghost whose character is supposed to comfort those in the destructive path of addiction, and is portrayed by the lovely Sarah Paulson. Ryan Murphy has been quoted saying that Sally is there to act as the "yin to the yang", which is a little strange because she seems to have malicious intentions herself as she is seen sewing the demon's victims into mattresses.
In fact all of the characters this season appear to be more cryptic than usual, leaving viewers in a perpetual state of "WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?!". The rest of this seasons arrangement of questionable characters includes: Iris, the hotel manager/desk clerk, who is played by Kathy Bates and sticks around just so she can be close to her son, Donovan, even though he wants nothing to do with her. Her character comes off as desperate for her son's love and willing to do anything to gain it. I personally find it a little bizarre that someone whose story-line, so far, leads us to think that she is a human and alive, and is aware of the happenings of the hotel would be so committed to staying and even helping ensure that things run smoothly. Ultimately what separates Iris from the rest is she is not condemned to stay, she chooses to which makes her seem a little more sinister than initially thought.
Donovan who has been Elizabeth/The Countess' vampire lover for the past 20 years and is portrayed by Matt Bomer. Donovan seems like a lost puppy in comparison to the strength and power that the Countess exudes, he is weak and it seems like his future in the hotel maybe be limited.
Liz Taylor who is a cross-dresser/bartender played by Denis O'Hare and seems to be harmless but who knows for how long. Being the most ambiguous and unknown of the characters on the show makes her appearances most intriguing.
Det. John Lowe (Wes Bentley) who moves into the hotel and is in the middle of investigating the crimes of the Ten Commandment Killer, who you may have guessed centers his murders around events from the bible. His character brings with him the trauma of losing his son Holden at an amusement park, little does he know his son is closer than he thinks. His drive for finding the truth is definitely going to get him into trouble in this hotel.
And last but not least James March, played by Evan Peters, who built the hotel as a grand disguise to cover up his murderous hobby. Although, we haven't seen much of what he has been up to since his demise we know what he is capable of and that it isn't good.
Overall the beginning of season five has created more questions than answers, peaking the interest of many viewers and proving to be filled with unlimited possibly when it comes to both plot and character development.
What will come next will undoubtedly be gruesome, terrifying and maybe even morally challenging but nevertheless we will religiously tune in every Wednesday at 10 p.m. EST.
