With all of the stupidity and idiocracy currently going on in the country, the time has never been more appropriate for the one show that haters say is stupid and for idiots to come back. I’m of course talking about "South Park."
For 20 years, "South Park" has kept society honest with its social commentary and messages using simple toilet humor and cussing as its main tool, and the people love it. With the show’s 20th season set to premiere September 14, (a lifespan once thought to be unprecedented and only reserved for "The Simpsons") the timing couldn’t be better for the children-centered, not-fit-for-children program to celebrate its 20th birthday.
The cries of many can be heard from sea to shining sea of everyone, most recently Clint Eastwood, of "over-pussification" and political correctness in America. (The latter was pretty much the main focal point of last season of "South Park.") Seriously, you really can’t say anything anymore without offending someone. Go back and watch the Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts from the 70s (yes Comedy Central didn’t invent the roasts, they’ve been around for a while) and just count off how many jokes would incite a riot or a march on the White House. Oh yeah, I forgot it's 2016 so they’d probably just start a hashtag …
Anyhow, the problem with America and society as a whole being the most thin skinned as it has ever been have been around for a couple years now. There is also the issue of the 2016 presidential election, which in itself is a literal circus that the show can touch upon. You throw in other world issues like the Zika Virus, the Rio Olympics, and #FreeTheNipple (the kids tell me that’s considered a world issue these days) and the show has a goldmine to comment upon).
"South Park" has always been able to keep society honest by pointing out the actual stupidity of the happenings in the world for 19 seasons (and a movie). With the country and society as stupid and as close to that of the movie Idiocracy as its ever been, the timing is absolutely perfect for show runners Trey Parker and Matt Stone to knock everyone down a peg.
Of course when discussing the issue at hand with a couple of buddies of mine, there is always the possibility since the country and society are so far down the tubes right now that Parker and Stone simply say “screw you guys, we're just going to go back to doing poop jokes like the first couple seasons and you guys can figure it out.” Here’s to hoping that isn’t the case. One thing is for certain though, I can’t wait to head on down to "South Park" and reunite with some friends of mine, and to those who haven’t seen the show for whatever reason, get out of your ivory tower and/or high horse and stop taking yourself so seriously and have a peep. It’ll do you some good.
