I have been trying and failing to start this article with some sort of inspirational and meaningful sentence.
The words are failing me because there are no words that can truly convey the grief I feel over the events of the past week. This overwhelming sense of sorrow is being felt all over the country, after yet another school shooting.
Enough is enough. There have been far too many mass murders of students. It is a heartbreaking and frightening world which we are being forced to live in because the people in power are refusing to take action on this issue. Politicians, who have been elected to protect the rights of those they represent, who have also taken millions of dollars from organizations like the NRA, thus ignoring the danger of guns, are creating a world in which children are allowed to be murdered in their classrooms.
I cannot help but wonder why we are not allowed to live in a country without mass shootings. Why are politicians refusing to protect the future generation? When will Congressmen and women propose legitimate gun control legislation? Why have they not made this issue a priority?
When will everyone with the power to do so begin to work to prevent disasters such as the tragedy in Florida and the tragedy in Las Vegas and the tragedy in Orlando and the tragedy in Newtown and the literal hundreds of gun violence tragedies that happen every year?
This is not a state by state issue. This is an epidemic that affects everyone in our nation. We need everyone to come together on this issue, regardless of the money that interest groups flaunt to try to prevent limitations on guns.
On another note, to all the Americans who don’t want to blame guns for the gun massacres in the country, what is the cause? Poor mental health? If we are going to blame gun violence incidents committed by American based terrorists on mental health, then where is the legislation that ensures insurance for those with mental health issues? Why has this nation not helped to allow people to get the help they need before they become terrorists who shoot their fellow Americans or before they use a gun to kill themselves?
Politicians have failed their nation.Every single politician who has not taken a stand against excessive gun use failed each and every victim of gun violence. But, I am hopeful for the future.I believe the next generation of people will work to end gun violence. Especially after this past week, seeing the survivors from the shooting Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School speak up and take action has been utterly inspiring. It is possible to end gun violence, so long as Americans become committed to creating a country that is safe.
