America Will Continue to Rise

Our history is defined by overcoming challenges and adversity and we will continue to rise

America Will Continue to Rise

It has been an emotionally charged week across the United States, election results seemed to tear this country in one direction or the other, separating Americans into seemingly unbreakable divisions. This country will rise, as it always has, to join together as long as we stop tearing each other apart. In frequent and long talks regarding the election and the future of our country, the most memorable remark has been, no matter the result we must rally together and believe this country will continue to rise.

Dear America,

Yes, this was a tough one. The "greatest country" seemed to crumble around us Tuesday night, but why? Why did we let an election destroy our friendships? Why did we let this election separate this country? Emotions took over this country and we took this election hard regardless of your political opinion, some event in the last week struck a nerve and you were angry or hurt or defensive. That's okay. We all have every right to feel how ever we feel about this election, but we need to keep in mind people are people and entitled to their opinions and we shouldn't tear each other down.

The week went on, people went back to work, students back to school, and our lives are continuing. As President Obama said in his speech to America, just as the sun will continue to rise, so will our country despite the tensions and hardships we have felt this week. Our lives will go on, we will still have successes and failures, good days and bad, unforgettable days, and typical routines, friendships and relationships. Just as our lives will go on, so will the future of our country.

The President is the guiding force of the United States but the citizens of our country can rally and fight for what we believe in. Regardless of your president, we will continue to fight. To fight for equality, to fight for women's rights, to fight for LGBTQ rights, to fight for immigration, to fight for religious freedoms, to fight for whatever cause we believe in. Your power still remains and your ability to hope for your future and our country's future will never be taken.

As hard as it is, we need to take a step back, accept our reality, continue to fight for what we want to change, say our prayers for our future and remember to pray for your future President and citizens too. Hope for the strength to continue to fight for your rights and the rights of your fellow citizens, hope for your future president to lead with honesty, strength, dignity, and respect.

As hard as this week has been for the United States, we will rise. Our history is defined by overcoming challenges and adversity and we will continue to push through, to rise and to become better as a country and as people.

Sincerely,

A Hopeful Milenial.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
