Why America Needs Comprehensive Sex Education

Let's be honest: abstinence-based education isn't cutting it anymore.

Why America Needs Comprehensive Sex Education

In recent years, the young people of America have been taking on the fight for equality and truth. So much more, people are breaking out of shells and standing up for what they believe in. I think that the beauty of the Internet inspires this. We have YouTubers and free thinkers everywhere, bringing new ideas to the table daily.

A few years ago, I started watching Laci Green, a feminist YouTuber, religiously. I fell in love with how she put controversial topics into perspective, how she was positive, and more. Along with a few videos on MTV Braless, she has made videos about the sex education system in America in a few of her videos.

It was a video named "A IS FOR ABSTINENCE" that made me realize how screwed up the education system truly is. Virginia is one of the 27 abstinence based states. However, a total of 37 states includes abstinence education (Guttmacher.org). At my middle school, we (me and other girls) were told that if we had sex before marriage, it was like we're presenting ourselves as a chewed piece of gum for our husbands. In high school, I was informed by my own health teacher that she had to fight to even teach us a little about birth control. Even so, she still couldn't mention condoms or teach the right way to put them on. When discussing a lot of things, it was made to sound like women were at fault. We had one of those "sex circle" things in the idea that if you had sex with someone, you had sex with every person they had been with. Movies were shown depicting women entirely at fault for getting pregnant (um... what?).

According to Guttmacher.org, 88 percent of schools allow parents to keep their kids from sexual education information. At the middle school level, only 10 percent taught children to use a condom as a part of required instruction. Thirteen states teach medically accurate education. Thirteen also require discussions of sexual orientation, but four of which require that only negative information is presented.

Pamela Kohler was a study lead author at the University of Washington. "'There was no evidence to suggest that abstinence-only education decreased the likelihood of ever having sex or getting pregnant,' she [Kohler] said in a prepared statement." Don Operario also mentioned the value of comprehensive sex education and the "ineffectiveness" of an abstinence-only approach (WashingtonPost.com).

My world, personally, was opened up about sex education after watching nearly all of Green's videos. I'm also able to have an open dialogue with my mother, and I require good communication for anyone I think about starting a relationship with. I've also gone to the Museum of Sex in New York City, New York, and I feel like it's an experience everyone should have.

The fact is, people are going to do it. Parents and school systems should at least make sure that when it does happen, it is safe and consensual.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

winter

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
