On Monday night, it was announced that Crimson Tide standout wide receiver Amari Cooper -- or, as most Alabama fans know him, "Cooooooop" -- is one of three finalists for the prestigious Heisman Trophy. Cooper, along with Oregon's Marcus Mariota and Wisconsin's Melvin Gordon, will make the trip to New York City for this Saturday's Heisman ceremony, representing the Tide as its fourth Heisman finalist to date.
A star on the field since his freshman year at Alabama, Cooper, now a junior, has shattered records consistently each season. Currently, Cooper holds the Alabama single-game, single-season and career records for receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns. Additionally, he broke the SEC records for most catches, yards, and touchdowns in a game, and this season he leads the FBS with his 115 receptions and 1,656 receiving yards and is ranked second in the FBS for receiving touchdowns.
Cooper's success comes with, not surprisingly, great honor. Not only is he a Heisman Finalist, but he was also named the Associated Press SEC Player of the Year on Monday, after playing an impressive game to help lead the Tide to a victory over Missouri in the SEC Championship and secure the top spot in the first ever College Football Playoff. The All-American is also a finalist for the 2014 Biletnikoff Award as well as the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award.
After learning that he was a finalist for this year's Heisman, Cooper credited his coaches and teammates, emphasizing the crucial roles that they played in helping him to achieve this honor. Cooper's invitation to New York is an especially unique one, considering that only six wide receivers have ever been invited to the ceremony as a finalist, with only four ever winning the trophy. The immense successes he has brought to the Alabama football program will be hard to beat, and he will go down in Alabama football history as one of the best.
No matter what the outcome of this Saturday's Heisman ceremony may be, the University of Alabama community is unbelievably proud of Cooper, his accomplishments, and the success that the team as a whole has achieved this season. Thanks for making us proud, Coop. Roll Tide.
