I Am A Feminist Because...

"I brake for birds. I rock a lot of polka dots. I have touched glitter in the last 24 hours... And that doesn't mean I'm not smart and tough and strong." Jessica Day

"Are you a feminist?" The word is pushed from people's mouths with scorn like it's Voldemort. I could say no to save myself the trouble, but that would be a lie. The word 'feminist' has taken such a negative connotation, and I think that's all wrong. I'm here to set the record straight, at least on my behalf.

I am a feminist for the stay-at-home mom. I am a feminist for the working mom. I am a feminist for the single woman. I am a feminist for all these different types of women because that is what it means to me. It means that there is no right way to be a woman. It means that I, and every other woman, has the choice. We have the right to choose what we want to make of our futures.

I am a feminist for young women like Malala Yousafzai who risk their lives just to attend school. I am a feminist for women across the world still being told their hymens being intact is the most important thing about them. I am a feminist because I believe that I should be judged for my intelligence and ability rather than the outfit I chose to wear to an interview.

I am a feminist for my nieces growing up before my eyes. I am a feminist because I never want them to doubt their worth and ability because someone else is telling them 'that is not how a lady should act'. Be loud or be quiet, but never be silenced. Be housewife, be a career woman, be both, and be confident that it is by your own choosing.

I am a feminist for every woman who came before me and struggled and fought to get us this far. For you, I will not stop pushing forward. For my peers, I will keep pushing for our futures. For the little girls, I will keep pushing to ensure you have the healthcare, education, and respect that you deserve.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
