Finding what is best for you.

Your Job Does Not Define You

So as a year goes by since I left Shoprite, I realize where I am working now gives me a better relief in life. No confusion. Right now I am working a part time job at Grato Restaurant that is one of ten Harvest Restaurants that they own. Thinking back to where I am not versus a year ago feels so much better to talk about now. Which is the reason why I am writing this now?

June 17h, 2016 was my last day of highschool and I was so happy to not only get out of high school but leaving the ShopRite. “ do not get me wrong working is fine and a great way to make your own money, but as I was leaving the building I thought about all the times they never granted my days off like I asked. For example, the first time I had a homecoming in high school to attend so I requested that Saturday off and asked to work my normal Saturday closing shift during that weekday. I look at the schedule and there I was on the book for Saturday after I asked for that day off. The manager claims she forgot so I said okay mistakes happen and we fix it. I worked that Tuesday and had off that Saturday to go to the homecoming dance! Thought that was going to be it, but no. Now it is November and I am very active in my church and I had to speak on that Friday after Thanksgiving. I put it in the book, asked to work that Wednesday and close, again claimed they forgot and had me on the books all week after I had asked, then said: “Oh well, find someone to take your shift.” Made me furious because I knew no one would want to close a grocery store on a Friday night. More events come later that next year and they same story over and over again. Claiming they forgot, but in reality, they just did not want to give it to me, no matter how hard of an employee I was to them.

I write this story as a way to let everyone know, no matter what the part time job is, never let them treat you like dirt if you show them respect. When they needed me I was right there jumping on the register when they needed me because it was busy. I was working at a place they called shop from home. Shop from home was a place where we the employee's shop and customers either have it delivered to their homes or pick it up themselves. The point is no matter what the job I was doing I always stopped what I was doing to help them and the least they could have done was honor what I asked. I did not ask for much.

Lastly, in this blog, I would like to point out how you should never allow a part time job to ever take advantage of you and think you can work hard all you time with nothing in return. Nothing wrong with working because it is great to make your own money instead of living off your parents. I walked out on my last day and said to my I am not coming back here, I am going somewhere where I can be respected. When I started my next job, I found the respect I needed and we work as a team. There is always going to be that one job that gets on your last nerve but there will always be a job for you.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
