In a perfect world, we would all show the people around us generosity, express how thankful we are for them, show them just how much they love them, and make healthy changes for themselves every day. But instead, we need reminders in the form of specific holidays to help us to do these simple things. On people’s birthdays and during the holiday season we are generous and kind. On Thanksgiving, we take the time to reflect on everything we should be thankful for all year long. And we wait until New Year’s Eve to make resolutions and changes that would be just as beneficial to us during any month of the year.
And then there is Valentine’s Day. People give this day a bad reputation, saying it’s a Hallmark holiday and it means nothing. I have always loved Valentine’s Day, ever since I was a little kid handing out cards in elementary school. I loved the pink and red hearts and frills everywhere. I loved that this day was a day to show anyone you loved, not just a significant other, just how much they mean to you. Whether it is with a box of chocolates or a flower, a homemade card, or a heart-shaped pancake, it is important to let Valentine’s Day be another one of those holidays that we use to remind us how we should act every day.
I love Valentine’s Day and I always will. Everyone is smiling and hugging and showing love to those around them. There are good food and good moods and I just love love. So this Valentine’s Day, spread the love a little thicker. Send a valentine to your mom, your best friend (and maybe even the boy in class that you have a crush on like you did in elementary school). Valentine’s Day is about love and loving those around you, and that’s why I will always celebrate with a smile and a big heart.
