When I tell people that I'm a member of Greek Life, their reactions are usually mixed. Some people want to know more, other people ask the question that everyone is thinking: "why would you want to be in a sorority?" Well, the answer is easy.
The first time I met my sisters-to-be during rush, I felt the connection instantly. Talking to them was like catching up with an old friend; familiar and easy. Each interaction after that made it seem more and more like it was meant to be. When I received my bid and met my pledge class, I felt the butterflies in my stomach that told me I was about to start an amazing adventure.
From my personal experience, the stereotype of the typical sorority girl just isn't true. Sure, we like to go to parties, but so does almost everyone else attending college. Claiming that all we do is party is a gross understatement of who we really are. We're so much more than that. Each sorority has a specific charity they work with, and we all do community service events together. We go to football games and the movies, we have majors ranging from Communications to Pre-Med and we have jobs on top of that.
Sure, there are some things that we do that could be considered "basic." We scream "BIG" or "LITTLE" across a crowded room, we craft and chant and wear our letters five days out of the week. This isn't a bad thing! These are some of the reasons being in a sorority is so fun. It's the traditions, the clothes passed down from generations and the stories we share with alumni that are so unique to us.
I am thankful every single day for my sisters, and for the adventures Greek Life has given me. I never have to worry about eating, studying or going to the gym alone. There is always at least one sister who can help me if I'm having trouble in a class, and dozens of closets I can raid if I have nothing to wear. When I'm having problems with a boy, need advice or have a bad day, I know with complete certainty that I can turn to any one of my sisters for support. We all genuinely care for and want the best for one another.
While some people may not understand my choice, it is by far the best one I have ever made.
