Sitting on one of the highest of seven hills, Florida A&M University was established on October 3, 1887. Throughout its 125 year history, FAMU has been a home away from home for thousands of students throughout the country.
FAMU assists in ensuring that students are equipped for the job market once they have completed their post-secondary education and have cultivated the minds that have led to the success of many alumni who own various businesses and working alongside Senators.
On August 7, alumna and renowned broadcast journalist Pam Oliver spoke with students in the School of Journalism and Graphic Communications. Ms. Oliver is no stranger to FAMU's campus; it's here she flourished as a student athlete.
Reminiscing on her days as a student, Ms. Oliver spoke on how fear can be healthy and the the importance of chasing after opportunities and being grounded in her personal life.
"I still go back to the very first rule, you have to love it. The who, what, where, when and why. It's that simple," said Oliver.
Since her collegiate days, the way that society receives and shares news has changed. Keeping this in mind, Ms. Oliver posed a question in hopes of challenging young journalists.
"I am a product of a culture where we didn't have all of this social media and etc.," said Oliver. "We carried around these 50-pound cameras and we cut and spliced our own tapes."
"I just want to know from this young generation, are you mostly into just tweeting things or going to a council meeting and while you're there you're tweeting information? Is that really reporting?"
In addition, Ms. Pam Oliver reflected on the triumphs and disappointments that she has tackled within her profession and explained how her first journalism job taught her a valuable lesson.
"I started my career in Albany, GA. I jumped at the opportunity and I had more responsibility right off the bat than I've ever could've imagined," related Oliver. "I didn't have a grasp, but I figured it out; you have to be proactive. There's nothing wrong with asking for help."
Although Ms.Oliver is currently an NFL sideline reporter, she credits FAMU for being her foundation and uses the basics to keep her journalistic skills up to par.
Referring to your AP book and sticking to the foundation of writing, being able to write a good sentence and using your action verbs every time -- not just when you feel like it -- were just a few key reminders Ms. Oliver provided.
Thai Floyd, an incoming broadcast journalism undergraduate student, spoke on how the "FAMULY" nature at FAMU made her excited to be on campus and how Ms. Oliver's words influenced her.
"Her words provided the assurance that I will need in this competitive industry," said Floyd. "Not everyone's journey is a walk in the park and as an incoming freshman I will need that reminder as I pursue my dreams."
Following the forum, students engaged in the unveiling of the Pam Oliver Production Room, which will be operated to support students in their efforts to pursue degrees in Journalism and Graphic Communications.
Ms. Pam Oliver is a successful newscaster for FOX Network where she provides live football coverage and press interviews. She has also been named as "Outstanding Woman in Journalism" by Ebony Magazine (2004) and is currently married to a sports producer.
