The political world is abuzz with “alternative facts”, but these alternative facts are better. Here are 5 facts about alternative music you may not have known.


“Last Night” by The Strokes contains a riff that is suspiciously similar to Tom Petty’s “American Girl”. Petty did not file a lawsuit against them.


Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse has mutilated himself onstage twice. He claims he did it just for fun—he was caught up in the moment.


The Alt-J song “Breezeblocks” quotes the children’s book “Where the Wild Things Are”. The band repeats the lines “please don’t go, I’ll eat you whole, I love you so”.


Van McCann of Catfish and the Bottlemen was a test tube baby. He even sings about it in their song “Fallout”.


Franz Ferdinand’s lead singer and guitarist Alex Kapranos used to be a welder. After that he was a chef, then he joined Franz Ferdinand.
