Mother's Day is important. It's a time to show the moms in our lives just how much they mean to us. It should also be a celebration of the lives and histories of all the women and mothers who came before us. Show your mom a good time this Mother's Day. Treat her like a queen, indulge in raunchiness and humor, and reflect on the importance of female friendship and role models. Celebrate your relationship and save room in your day for an important discussion about equality in the modern world.
1. Don't go with cliché Hallmark, get her an interesting card.
2. Watch some "Broad City" together.
Ilana and Abbi are hilarious, crazy, and real. You can't celebrate womanhood better than watching this duo.
3. Take a self-defense class together.
Connect with your mom and feel empowered. Kick some ass, show your mom she raised someone who does not put up with nonsense.
4. Hang out with lots of other moms and daughters.
Continue celebrating womanhood, female friendship and powerful female role models by hanging with other awesome ladies!
5. Go protest the violation of women's rights.
What better way to celebrate Mother's Day than to support women who have had their choices taken away? Protest, write letters, and stand up for female reproductive rights. My mom had a choice, many do not. It is always important to remember that.
6. Bake her a cake.
Who doesn't like cake?
7. Hit the town.
No matter what she says when you call to check in, your mom does not get out enough. So this Mother's Day take her out and show her a good time. You can be the sober driver for one night.
8. Dare I say margarita night?
Or stay in. Margaritas at home are just as good. Nothing shows your mom you love her quite like bringing her a giant marg and sharing good conversation.
9. Watch any movie other than Mother's Day.
Might I suggest something that isn't completely white-washed and trite? Try "The Joy Luck Club" (incredible movie about Chinese mothers and daughters), "Thirteen" (life is hard, but at least you have your mom), "Mama Mia" (don't lie, you love ABBA), or "Aliens" (Ripley was one strong woman).
10. Get her realistic gifts.
Raising me was hard enough. Show some damn appreciation.
11. Just talk to her. She is a real live person, not just your mom.
Sometimes I definitely forget my mom has feelings, she's just my mom, you know? She is supposed to be the one with the answers to all my problems. How dare she have any of her own! Listen to what she has to say. Ask her about her life.
