Earlier in the year, I wrote about traditions that sororities and fraternities at Marshall University have. One tradition is coming up on April 19, from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Look around campus this time of year and you will see a giant strawberry in the yard of Alpha Xi Delta. This year marks the 67th Annual Strawberry Breakfast. The event is hosted by Alpha Xi Delta's Mother's Club and is held every spring semester.

The event is one that Greeks, community members, students, and alumni love. People start asking about Strawberry Breakfast in February because they want to make sure that they get their ticket. Why is it so popular? Alpha Xi Delta's signature strawberry butter of course! (which you can buy by the tub) There is always a phenomenal turnout for this event and allows people to start their day with a sweet breakfast.

You can contact a sister of Alpha Xi Delta to purchase your ticket or even buy it at the door! The tickets are only $5. For the price of $5, you get homemade pancakes, sausage, eggs, biscuits, chocolate covered strawberries, a drink, and a side of the signature strawberry butter! You can eat your breakfast and have a conversation in the dining room of the Alpha Xi Delta house, take it to go, or even have it delivered!

What is Alpha Xi Delta's Mother's Club? It is exactly what it sounds like, it is a club of mothers of both active and alumni of Alpha Xi Delta. Mother's Club raises this money to help with things for the house. If something goes out the Mother's Club will pay for it so that the girls who live in the house will not have to wait or go without while they are waiting to hear back from their housing board. For example, this year the Keurig in the kitchen went out and thanks to the Mother's Club they were able to get a new one that evening.

Not all of the money goes to Mother's Club. A portion of the money will be donated to Alpha Xi Delta's philanthropy. Alpha Xi Delta's across the nation raise money for Autism Speaks. Autism Speaks is a non-profit organization and is the largest autism science and advocacy organization in the United States. Throughout the year the sorority raises money for Autism Speaks with their Taco "Bout Philanthropy and Football FrenXi. Earlier in April, which is World Autism Awareness Month, they had chalked the sidewalks of Marshall University with quotes and facts.

If you do not know where the Alpha Xi Delta house is, it is directly across from the Marshall University Bookstore. The address is 1645 5th Avenue. Alpha Xi Delta cannot wait to see you and share a tradition!

We don't buy into these... just like how we don't buy our friends.

Being a part of any organization undoubtedly comes with the pitfalls of being grouped into negative stereotypes, and sororities are certainly no exception. Here are the top few things, that I find at least, are some of the most irritating misconceptions that find their way into numerous conversations...

8. "The whole philanthropy thing isn't real, right?"

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
