Many of us here in America don’t know the details about what’s going on in other countries, like Iraq. There’s some new information, however, about ISIS and the resistance in Mosul.
In Mosul, Iraq, there’s a graffiti artist (who remains unnamed for safety reasons) who spray paints the letter M in Arabic around the city. He’s a part of the resistance called Mosul Battalions. Shortly after ISIS took control of Mosul in June, 2014, people started to resist their control by forming this group. After 2 years of fighting, the Iraq army tells CNN that “they’re close to regaining the city back from ISIS” (CNN.com, Damon). We’re left to understand that the whole reason ISIS is being defeated is because of the help from the graffiti artist. When he spray paints M’s around the city, he is letting the public know they are not alone in this fight. “We are here, we are among you, and we are watching” is their message to ISIS, and soon the city of Mosul will be saved from ISIS from the brave individuals who are in the group of Mosul Battalions.
