10 Things Every "Broken Girl" Needs To Hear

Please know, you are enough.

10 Things Every "Broken Girl" Needs To Hear
Katy Belcher

To the girl reading this,

I know who you are. I was you once upon a time. I still am you from time to time. You’re insecure, you don’t feel comfortable in your skin, you stare at yourself in the mirror for what seems like forever, nitpicking every little thing you find wrong. You wonder what is going to happen in the future. Who are you going to marry? When are you going to have children? What are they going to look like? Will you keep your friends from high school? Have a great career by the time you’re 25? Will I ever get rid of these love handles? I have too many freckles.

STOP!

Stop listening to the voices in your head. Stop scrolling on Instagram and crying over the fact that you’re not as beautiful as those girls. Or you’re not as skinny as those girls. Cause reality is, they probably aren’t happy either. Or they have people telling them what to eat and when to eat and a makeup team, making sure they are beautiful and flawless from every angle.

It’s not real. It’s not authentic. Real life is flaws. Real beauty is flaws. And you are beautiful.

A couple months back, I was feeling kind of down on myself, I started criticizing everything about myself, even though I had people telling me I was beautiful. So, one night, I wrote down 10 things that woman need to be reminded of, and I read it once a week, sometimes more.

1. Everyone has rolls when they bend over.

2. When someone tells you that you're beautiful, believe them. They aren't lying.

3. Sometimes, we all wake up with breath that could kill a goat.

4. For every woman unhappy with her stretch marks, is another woman who wishes she had them.

5. You should definitely have more confidence. And if you saw yourself the way others see you, you would.

6. Don't look for a man to save you. Be able to save yourself.

7. It's okay to not love every part of your body, but you should.

8. We all have that one friend who seems to have it all together. That woman with the seemingly perfect life. Well, you might be that woman to someone else.

9. You should be a priority. Not an option, a last resort, or a backup plan.

10. You're a woman. That alone makes you pretty remarkable.

If this is you, save this article. Take a screenshot. Write these facts on sticky notes and put them on your mirror or around your room. When you look in the mirror, find things you love about yourself and say them out loud. Surround yourself with positive, uplifting people. Stand tall and be proud of who you are. Get yourself an anthem, a girl-power song that just gets you pumped up and ready to go for the day.

You are beautiful. You are confident. You are a priority. You are worth it.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
