When I think about going places my first thoughts are, who will I go with? Where will I go? I usually add friends to the list of travel buddies in hopes of having a great time and bonding with one another. Of course, that’s always a great option but lately, I’ve been considering a solo road trip.
I’m sure there are many reasons to avoid going by yourself. Suddenly, there are a number of risks involved. You are alone and much more vulnerable. Figuring things out might take longer because there aren’t other people you know to help you out.
Even though these points are true, traveling alone can also have multiple advantages. First of all, when you’re on your own there is less responsibility. You don’t have to worry about anyone else but yourself. If you feel like doing something, you can go for it without asking others what they would want to do.
Not to mention there’s less chaos. It’s only you and that means less luggage, less money, and less drama. There will be no fights and no disagreements. You can pack what you want. No one will tell you what you can or can’t do. You can march to the beat of your own drum without anyone to get in your way.
It gets even better. Traveling alone will give you a sense of confidence like nothing else. If you go somewhere far away, chances are the culture will be different and making friends will be a challenge. Taking on a challenge like that will produce a new kind of self-assurance and boldness in anyone.
You’ll have to go out to eat by yourself. Watch movies alone. Sleep without others around you. The human need to interact with others will kick in eventually and making friends with a variety of people is bound to happen.
If you feel like taking a break from socializing afterward, it’s easy. You’re not obligated to talk to any travel companions, because your alone. Enjoy the solitude and make friends when you want.
As sappy as this sounds, you can get the whole “Eat, Pray, Love” experience if you want it. Going alone means exploring what you like without the opinions of your peers. Discovering cultures without the pressure to conform to your own. It is essentially appreciating life outside of what you know.
Everyone should at least try to travel on their own once. It’ll be a worth-it adventure you couldn’t get anywhere else.
