Friday, February 16th marks the start of the 2018 NBA All-Star Weekend! This is a weekend notorious for highlight plays, rising stars, and insane overall skill. Players from each team will represent their city and its fans by competing in one or more of the many events scheduled for the weekend. It is a great honor to wear your team jersey while competing for the three-point or slam dunk title.
Every year there are no competitors looking to dethrone last year's champion. There are even team events that put players together who would never play with each other without this amazing weekend. The festivities begin Friday the 16th with the Celebrity game and the Rising Stars game. Self-explanatory, the celebrity game allows celebrities from across the world compete on the biggest stage. Celebrities like Kevin Hart, Justin Bieber, and even Usain Bolt have competed in the celebrity game. This game is usually nonchalant and all about fun.
Next, the rising stars game puts together the top 24 first or second year players who are thought to have great potential. These games are always interesting because of all the young talent in the NBA today. Looking back on these games might be the most interesting because it is awesome seeing NBA stars play against each other back when they weren't considered "stars" yet.
Next, Saturday is the day of contests. First is the Skills challenge, where players dribble through a course and need to finish the race with a 3 pointer. Next, the three-point contest. This is when the leagues best sharpshooters come together to compete and see who the best shooter in the league is. Usually, it's Steph Curry...
Finally, Saturday night is the dunk contest. This is what everyone came to see. The best athletes in the world all showing off their raw athleticism. This is what it's all about. Sunday night is the big one. 8 PM tips off the All-Star Game. The reason everyone is going to LA. This year captains Steph Curry and LeBron James took turns choosing their teams, in comparison to East Vs. West in past years. I think this method might turn out to be smart because the West has always dominated the East.
