When you think about a model, what's the first thing that comes to mind? I would bet that a majority of you would first think about someone ungodly skinny, maybe even stuck up, with shiny hair and super tanned skin. Or some of you may straight up think of someone who is anorexic. And I mean, you would not be wrong. There have been many models who have come out saying that because of modeling, they suffer from anorexia, bulimia, and many other horrible eating disorders.
But that's not the reason I'm writing this article. Yes, models having eating disorders is a huge problem that needs to be talked about. Yes, little girls seeing super skinny girls in magazines and wanting to be just like that is a huge issue that can resolved. But that's not the reason we're here.
Recently, I saw a picture of Candice Swanepoel, the famous supermodel who is most famous for her work with Victoria's Secret. Currently, Candice is pregnant. She recently posted a picture of herself topless, but covering her breasts, and showing off her growing baby bump to which she revealed the gender of her baby.
You may be wondering to yourself, "OK, why do I care?" To which, I wondered the same thing. I am a girl who is average weight and average height, I have no dreams to be a model in my future and the only model I really pay attention to is Behati Prinsloo because I love Adam Levine. In other words, I am not a model, do not want to be a model, nor do I pay much attention to modeling itself. It wasn't until I scrolled through the comments section and found one from a woman named Kayla, it went as follows:
"Women have no class now days , show their body parts for every occasion. mainly celebs, models, stars ect guess when you have no real talent ,like the kardashians, you show body parts to get attention good or bad. men don't have to do that ,or worry about what cloths they wear most of the time either . and some women wonder why they are seen as sex objects . what do you expect?"
No class? Do you realize who she works for? She's a Victoria's Secret model, she's literally paid to wear little-to-no clothing. Heck, if I had her body I would feel confident enough to do that, too. I mean, you wear the exact same thing when you go to the swimming pool, so what?
Then, we get to the part where Kayla says "...guess when you have no real talent..."
Let me clue you in on a few things, modeling is a lot harder than just getting up on a stage, walking in a straight line, posing for two seconds, then walking back out. It's actually work out to stay in shape, eat healthy so no fat clings to your hips, learn how to pose, learn how to be photogenic, make sure you have a great smile, don't squint your eyes when you smile, have good chemistry with the other models, work well with the photographer, be able to look good in the clothes, have shiny hair, have bouncy hair, ect. Modeling is not a piece of cake "walk down the runway, walk back, get your check" kind of thing.Models have talent.
Models are underappreciated for the hard work they put into their job.
When you think of a good model, you think of women like this:
These woman are GORGEOUS, they represent all kinds of woman and they are KILLIN' it.
But, you cannot love models like that and not appreciate models like this:
These woman are also GORGEOUS and are also killin' it.
No matter your size, all models are talented.
No matter your skin color, all models are talented.
No matter how bouncy or shiny your hair is, all models are talented.
Stop telling models that they are untalented, brainless little sticks who just smile for the camera because that is not true.
