All About Me: Sarah Herr 2.0
Sarah Herr

Hi my name is Sarah Herr. I am currently an upcoming freshman at Shippensburg University and here is a little bit about me.

  1. My best friends would describe me as a caring, fun, and funny (at least I think I am).
  2. If you were to walk in my room you’d first off see a five-foot teddy bear my boyfriend gave to me. Then there’s a lamp, messy bed and of course, hair ties everywhere. After that there is my desk, make up all over my desk, my laptop, mirror and a fat cat. Lastly, if you were to walk in my room you’d see me binge watching Netflix with a pack of fruit snacks in my hand.
  3. Three random facts: I can say my abc’s backwards, I love sushi and my favorite topics to talk about include politics, religion, feminism and every other topic you aren’t supposed to discuss in professional settings.
  4. My favorite teacher is my journalism teacher. I had her for three years during high school. She has helped shape me into the person I am now. I could go on and on about how much of an impact she’s made in my life but at this point all I can say is I was truly blessed to have had her as a teacher.
  5. I chose to create content for Odyssey because I firmly believe everyone has a story and opinion. As a teenager not many people in my life have respected my opinions or ideas but here everyone is in the same boat. We are Millennials on a mission to make a difference and telling our point of views. This platform has given me the opportunity to start learning about myself as well as learning about other's point of views from all kind of backgrounds and cultures.
  6. I chose communications/journalism. I had a journalism class in high school with an amazing teacher. Her passion and drive made me eager to get to class and learn. The more I learned the more I fell in love with the world of writing.
  7. In five years I see myself graduated, successful and employed. I see myself still being with my childhood best friend/high school sweetheart and owning a dog and hedgehog. I see myself in a humble abode filled with neutral colored accent pieces. I see myself traveling the world with the one I love. I hope to see myself happy so I can finally say, I made it.
  8. An animal that describes me is a panda. I like to sleep, roll around and eat. Also, pandas are a part of my culture and I am learning to embrace me, myself, and my roots.
  9. If I could live through a historical event I would listen to Martin Luther King Jr.'s I have a dream speech. I am so passionate about civil rights and equality. Nothing would be more amazing than to hear one of the most influential person our country has ever seen speak.
  10. When I was little I always said I wanted to write for the New York Times. Currently I do want to write but not newspaper journalism. I want a more creative job either working for a magazine or being on the big screen telling people the news.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
