A Letter To My Role Model

You've shaped me into the person I am today

A Letter To My Role Model

Hey.

First of all, thank you for being you.

You might be someone I know well, or someone I’ve never met. You might be older than me, or younger than me. You might have accomplished so many things, or you might not have accomplished anything yet. The only thing that is for sure, is that I look up to you more than anyone else in the world. When I think of what I want to be, you always come to mind. It might be professionally, as you could be a successful business owner or celebrity. It might be personal, as you could be funny and smart and cool and kind. It doesn't really matter, because I will always look up to you.

You were my role model before I even knew what a role model was. I admired your personality, your drive for success, and your constant need to put others before yourself. You were confident and beautiful and perfect. You were everything I hoped to me and more. I stood on the sidelines, watching your every move and trying my hardest to imitate you. As a young child, I thought that I needed to be just like you. You were, and still are, perfect, so what child wouldn’t want to be you?

Now, as a young adult, I realize that I don’t need or want to be just like you. While I still admire you, I admire you in the fact that you are your own person. I realize now that this, in fact, was the whole reason why I even admired you in the first place. You aren’t afraid to stand out from the crowd, speak your mind, and put yourself out there. You are confident in yourself, and that is the most important thing for anyone. So now, instead of trying to imitate you, I try to emulate you. Instead of being you, I bring aspects of you to me, in order to enhance myself. You always try to be your best self, so now I always try to be my best self.

I want to thank you for always being there for me, whether you know me or not. By simply living your life, you have forever changed mine. People have different role models throughout their lives, but you were the role model that shaped me most into the person that I am today. Thank you for being you, so that I could be me.

You taught me that it’s okay to mess up. It’s okay to laugh at yourself. It’s okay to be a little weird. It’s okay if someone doesn’t want to be your friend (if they don’t it’s their loss). It’s okay to let loose and have fun. It’s okay to take things too seriously. It’s okay to dream. It’s okay to fail, as long as you try again. It’s okay to be yourself.

It’s okay to not be perfect. In reality, it’s okay to be perfectly imperfect.

Without you, I wouldn’t be me, so thank you for the greatest gift.

Sincerely,

Your biggest fan

P.S. Don’t you ever feel like you haven’t accomplished anything. You don’t know how much I look up to you. Even if you falter, I will still always look up to you. Keep going, cause I know that you can do anything.

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

As this semester wraps up, students can’t help but be stressed about finals. After all, our GPAs depends on these grades! What student isn’t worrying about their finals right now? It’s “goodbye social life, hello library” time from now until the end of finals week.
