An Open Letter To My Little Sister

What’s a 20-year age gap between sisters?

An Open Letter To My Little Sister

All my life I’ve never liked kids. I never babysat, I never volunteered to supervise kid activities, I’d never even changed a diaper. The idea of a sibling was something abstract and distant, never really seemed like it was going to happen. Both parents tried, but it never seemed to work out. Years went by and I just assumed I was always going to be an only child. Until you came along.

My life hasn’t been the same since you came into my life.

We won’t have memories of growing up together like most siblings. We don’t have the same biological parents. We are constantly mistaken for mother and daughter. But, I wouldn’t change any of that because I have the sister I was meant to have.

You have your moments of driving me crazy, I guess it comes with being siblings. You not listening when I say you can’t ride the cat aren’t necessarily my favorite times. Or those times where you have no fear and sit or stand where you aren’t supposed to be. It was cute when you waddled after learning to walk. I remember when we wanted you to walk so badly… Now I just want to duct tape you to a chair. When you feel the need to scream loudly in the car, yeah my ear drums cry with you, trust me. I remember when Mom wanted you to say her name first, but you called her Bob and everyone else Mom.

You constantly have me laughing. From your monstrous splashes in the bathtub to your horror film rendition when you have control of the phone during FaceTime. We're so alike even though we didn't grow up together. You snack like a hobbit and grin like a mischievous leprechaun.

You’re beautiful, clever kid and you’re not even two yet. I can only imagine what you are going to accomplish in life. I know you are going to be a handful at times, especially with me as your big sister to teach you all my tricks (you’re welcome Mom). I hope you explore everything life has to offer. I don't know if you'll ever understand how much you've changed my life. You’ve given me a bond that gets me through the toughest days. I always look forward to my time with you. Even if that involves you kicking me out of my spot on the couch while I’m watching a movie for an assignment. Or if you decide to climb my head while I talk to Mom. Changing diapers aren’t as scary anymore either! You came into my life just when I need you. Things were hard and I didn't know how to do things on my own. You gave me a reason to figure it out. Made me strive to be better and stronger so I could be someone you looked up to.

You are my favorite person in this world and I love you more than anything. I love being your big sister, sharing a half birthday with you, and taking selfies. I love sharing food with you, which most people know I never shared with ANYONE before. I love watching you get super excited about things, even if it’s a simple piece of chocolate. I’ve changed, my life has changed, our family has changed, and it’s all because of you kid. You brighten my day and make my life happier. I know you’re going to do great things and I’m really glad I get to be a part of that.

No matter where I go or what happens in the world, I will always be your big sister and I will always love you.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
