A Letter To My Future Self

A Letter To My Future Self
Ignitum Today

To My Future Self,

I don't know what age you'll read this at. I hope you remember that I wrote this as a young 20 something anxious to get her life started. I hope that at whatever point you read this, that you're living the life that we had in mind.

I hope you're doing well. I hope you're really happy doing what you love. I hope that some of the same people in my life now are still a big part of your life. I hope that you've found "the one," or you're working on it somehow. And if not? Then I really hope you're happy making your dreams a reality on your own.

I don't know what you're doing, or where you'll be. I don't know who's going to be in your life or what you'll be working towards next. I have the best intentions for you, and I'm going to try the best to make life the way I want it.

But I know life is about to get hard, a lot harder than anything I've ever experienced before. These past years have been challenging, but I know life after college is a whole new ballpark. And I hope that my plans are the right path for you.

Wherever you are in your life, I hope these things for you:

I hope you haven't put your dreams on the back burner.

I hope whatever you're doing, that you haven't forgotten about the dreams we've had in the past. I hope you have realized that you have the greatest potential to make anything you want a reality.

I hope you've been more exclusive with the people you let into your life.

I hope that these years have been good to you in regards to your relationships. I hope you've continued to nourish the good friends and cut the bad ones. I hope you've been more selective with who you give your time to without becoming cynical. I just hope you're surrounded by wonderful people.

I hope you're following your own compass.

I hope that you're listening to your own voice instead of everyone else's. Everyone's journey is different, and people have an idea of what your life is supposed to be like. It's always been like that, and that's not going to change. I hope you fight hard enough for the life you want and don't let other's opinions stop you from getting what you want.

I hope you remember the struggle that got you where you are.

I hope that wherever you are, you're succeeding. I hope you love your life and always work for something. But I also hope you never forget the struggle, the questions you would ask yourself and the way life led you to where you are today. Never take life for granted, and always remember how precious life is.

I also hope you have a nice car: one that won't break down. And I hope you have made some beautiful memories too. That's all I have to say for now.

From,

Your Younger Self

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
