1. Everything Is Forgotten, Methyl Ethel
The sophomore album from the Australia-born trio of rockers. It is something you can listen to anytime you want to hear the magic. It is hard to determine whether the mood of the work is more sad, or upbeat. However, it's easy to be sucked into the universe that they create with their magic. Definitely, a record not to miss.
2. About U, MUNA
This amazing band created an album with songs that tackle all kinds of subjects. From, "I Know A Place," which was written about the Pulse shooting, to "Crying On The Bathroom Floor," which calls attention to abusive relationships. This group has made an important work which is not only catchy but can be seen as a rallying call for many causes. A must-hear, in my opinion.
3. Blond, Frank Ocean
As many of you know, we waited a long time for Mr. Ocean to release his second album, and boy was it worth the wait. Blond is an immaculate collection of art that Ocean created for us. From the beginning notes of "Nikes," to the second ending of, "Futura Free," we are taken on a journey. It might have you in tears, but know that it was well worth it.
4. Freetown Sound, Blood Orange
Blood Orange is a project created by producer, Dev Hynes, and I cannot thank him enough for the work that he has done. Listening to this album is experimental and reflective, and altogether a masterpiece. He created it out of the many experiences which people of color go through in everyday life. It is a record for anyone who feels as if they are not enough, or too much. Named after the capital of Sierra Leone where his father is from, it is a black record which should never be skipped over.
5. A Seat At The Table, Solange
Solange Knowles has created an absolute masterpiece out of her efforts to discuss the issues concerning people of color and racism in today's society. Through the pointed songs and interludes, she weaves a conversation into the entire work. One cannot simply listen to just one song on the album without going through the entire thing, it's simply impossible. It is too enthralling, and attention-grabbing to put down. A Seat At The Table is a masterful work which one should not put off listening to any longer.
