There are certain albums that come into your life so subtly and so unexpectedly that you never really realize you needed them until you’ve listened to it from beginning to end. For me, this is "Melodrama."

"Melodrama" is Lorde’s second album to be released and came out in June 2016. After taking over three years before releasing new music, Lorde did not disappoint. I think a three-year hiatus from the public and fans was exactly what she needed to grow and expand her sound into what it is today.

I recently had the privilege to attend Lorde’s Melodrama Tour. And if there’s one thing I’m sure of, it’s that everyone — and I mean everyone — needs to experience at least one of her concerts in their lifetime.

Lorde has an absolute knack for performing and being on stage. The presence she gives off and energy she brings out during her performances is a magical feeling and there’s really no other way to describe it.

With that, I’ve been saving this review for just this time.

Here’s a review on my take of “Melodrama” by Lorde.

1. "Green Light."

"Green Light” was released in March 2017 as the first single of the album. I remember hearing this song for the first time thinking this is absolutely so different than anything she released from "Pure Heroine." It’s such an upbeat, catchy tune that sets you off so well for what the rest of the album is. Hearing this song live and seeing how she performs it just gives you every bit of love it deserves and more.

Favorite lyric: “Thought you said that you would always be in love / But you’re not in love no more.”

2. "Sober."

A lot of this album was written as a reflection of herself and growing up. “Sober” has such a funky beat and carry to it but it’s such a good song. The lyrics layered with the music, it’s like nothing could fit better. Everything builds and then it’s just released and it’s such an addictive song.

Favorite lyric: “In the morning, you’ll be dancing with all the heartache.”

3. "Homemade Dynamite."

This song! As if she couldn’t make it any better than it already was, a remix of this song including Khalid, SZA and Post Malone was released in late 2017. "Homemade Dynamite" is the song that you can never get enough of. It is so, so catchy with such good beats and articulations of certain sounds and creativity. Even listening to side by side, it’s impossible to pick a favorite between the original and the remix.

Favorite lyric: “So let’s let things come out of the woodwork / I’ll give you my best side, tell you all my best lies.”

4. "The Louvre."

This sweet song. This sweet, sweet song is exactly what the album needs. It feels so delicate and so light but it’s such a dramatic, buildable song that is definitely on my list of favorites. "The Louvre" carries you to a totally different place and transform anything you're feeling into absolutely love and bliss. I’ve never heard anything like this before and honestly, I think that’s what makes it so good.

Favorite lyric: “I am your sweetheart psychopathic crush” and “But lover, you’re the one to blame, all that you’re doing.”

5. "Liability."

There always has to be at least one song that breaks you down and makes you feel raw and vulnerable on every good album, and this is that song. "Liability" takes you down every dark path of not feeling good enough or worthy enough and that's what makes this song so special, I think everyone can relate to meaning and lyrics of this song. It’s so simply created with just her voice and the piano and I think that’s what makes it feel as raw as it does.

Favorite lyric: “I know that it’s exciting / Running through the night, but / Every perfect summer’s / Eating me alive until you’re gone / Better on my own.”

6. "Hard Feelings/Loveless."

Somehow, Lorde was able to combine two completely different songs in two completely different times and have them fit together as if they were always meant to be. "Hard Feelings/Loveless" pulls you in two different directions in the absolute best way possible. After a mere 15-second silence, “Loveless” brings itself in and it ties the rest of what the song is all together. It’s spectacular, really.

Favorite lyric: “I care for myself the way I used to care about you” and “Three years, loved you every single day, made me weak.”

7. "Sober II (Melodrama)."

I really did not know one song could fit an album so perfectly until I heard this song. This is such a simple song, it’s literally just under three minutes long but ties everything together. From the layering of music to the different beats and lyrics that get brought in, it’s the epitome of "Melodrama" and everything that it is.

Favorite lyric: “They’ll talk about us, all the lovers / How we kill and kill each other.”

8. "Writer in the Dark."

I will admit, I liked this song a whole lot more once I heard it live for the first time. The vulnerability and raw sounds of this song make it so breathtakingly stunning. Lorde presents "Writer In The Dark" in such a way that makes you feel so deeply what she felt and it's so astonishing to feel something like that. This song is so delicate; I feel like I can’t take a breath or make a single noise while listening to it.

Favorite lyric: “I’ll find a way to be without you, babe.”

9. "Supercut."

I really try to stay unbiased all the way through these reviews but it’s quite impossible when it’ comes to these last few songs on the album. I never knew I needed a song like “Supercut” until I got it. It’s such an upbeat song that still draws so much meaning from it. It’s nearly impossible not to bop around to this song beat or lyrics.

Favorite lyric: “Cause in my head in my head, I do everything right / When you call I’ll forgive and not fight / All the moments I play in the dark / Wild and fluorescent, come home to my heart.”

10. "Liability (Reprise)."

This little two-minute interlude track really sets the closing for this album. And still, she packs so much into the short amount of time that this song is. The number of sounds and layers that she builds throughout really express her as an artist and all that she’s capable of.

Favorite lyric: “All of the dreams that get harder / All of the things that I offer you.”

11. "Perfect Places."

Honestly, save the best for last, and best for last she does. If there’s any song that makes me as happy as this song does, I haven’t discovered it yet. Every feeling of being free and exploring yourself is exactly what this song exemplifies. "Perfect Places" is the song that opens your heart up to joy and expression which is something that everybody needs. It closes off everything that "Melodrama" is so well and ties the whole album together with one song.

Favorite lyric: “I’m 19 and I’m on fire” (but really the whole song).

And that’s a wrap on another magnificent album that always deserves more attention. I don’t know how an album could fit my life or my coming of age as much as one does, but this album really does that.

I haven’t felt more connected or more attached to one album in such a long time. I feel so passionately for each one of these songs and I can only hope that you give it the time and the listen that it rightfully deserves.

College isn't easy, and I'm afraid I'm not going to make it at the rate my mental health is going.

Everyone tells you that college is hard, but they fail to explain why. Sure, classes are hard. Math sucks, and political science can be so boring. But that's not even what's killing me about college. What's killing me about college is my deterioating mental health.

As a college student, I feel as if people don't understand just how exhausted I, and fellow college students are. We have so many things going on, all the time, and sometimes it's hard to explain to people how we feel. Personally...I'm tired. I'm sad. And I'm struggling every single day with my emotions. But the thing is, it hasn't always been this way. I haven't always hated school, so why am I feeling like this now?
